Abstract: Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) devices for analysis of geological and related samples, and related methods. In the method, a scanning table having a geological core is moved from a start position to an end position for each position in a plurality of positions of the scanning table corresponding to an e region of interest of the geological core. At each position, laser ablation is performed on the exposed surface of the geological core using an oscillating planar focus laser. Contemporaneously with performing laser ablation on the exposed surface of the geological core, spectroscopy is permitted on the emitted light received by a fiber optic receiver sharing an optical path with the oscillating planar focus laser.

Abstract: The technology relates to detecting water or fouling on the exterior surface of a sensor cover, for instance due to precipitation or debris (fouling). Such objects on the sensor cover surface may degrade operation of the sensor, which can be problematic for vehicles operating in an autonomous driving mode. According to an aspect of the technology, a waveguide layer is provided on the sensor cover. A laser emits light at a selected wavelength along one side of the waveguide layer. The light waveform propagating along the waveguide layer is affected (distorted) by precipitation and/or fouling on the surface of this layer. A detector receives the distorted waveform. The system determines whether water and/or fouling is present based on the received waveform. This allows the system to determine whether to activate a cleaning module or to factor in the information when processing received sensor data.

Abstract: Automatic detection of mechanical defects in piece parts, such as floor covering planks, enables removal of the defective parts off an inspection path. A bypass conveyor system enables defective parts to be transported beyond or around a manual inspection, enabling personnel performing the subsequent inspection to focus on appearance defects. Once the remaining parts have been inspected by a manual process, the parts transported by the bypass conveyor system are returned to the production line. Defective parts may be distinguished by a marking capability that provides the ability to mark according to a variety of classes of defects.

Abstract: A three-dimensional detection method for red tide algae based on holographic imaging is provided, including: constructing a coaxial optical path based on a structure of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer; determining reconstruction distances of the system under different object distances; constructing an original hologram database of the algae; selecting an original hologram, and two reconstructed holograms with different reconstruction distances as a three-dimensional spatial sample of the original hologram; labeling algae in sample, and recording species and bounding boxes of the algae; training a target detection network with the sample of the holograms and a label file; detecting, with the trained target detection neural network, the sample of the algae to obtain species and a quantity of plankton in imaged water. The disclosure further provides a three-dimensional detection device for red tide algae. The method can improve a detection speed and detection accuracy of the red tide algae.

Abstract: The fire detection system is provided to enable early detection of a location where a fire may occur. When detecting a location which vibration reached in the optical fiber 104, the sensor unit 102 transmits information indicating the location to the information output unit 101. The gas state detection section 103 transmits information indicating the state of gas to the information output unit 101. The information output unit 101 receives the information indicating the location which the vibration reached in the optical fiber 104 and the information indicating the state of gas, and outputs information indicating a sign of a fire outbreak occurred when the state of gas meets a predetermined condition.

Abstract: This invention provides devices for use in various analytical applications including single-molecule analytical reactions. Methods for detecting analytes optically by propagating optical energy by waveguides within a substrate are provided. Analytical devices are provided which have both shallow and deep waveguides in which illumination light is transported through the deep waveguides and coupled into the shallow waveguides. The shallow waveguides provide evanescent field illumination to analytes, such as single-molecule analytes, within nanometer scale wells. Integrated devices including integrated detectors such as CMOS detectors are included.
