    Abstract: An engine system includes a first camshaft, a second camshaft, a first camshaft phaser, and a second camshaft phaser. The first camshaft phaser has a first camshaft sprocket, and the second camshaft phaser has a second camshaft sprocket. The engine system also includes a crankshaft spaced from the first and second camshafts, and a crankshaft sprocket coupled to the crankshaft. The engine system further includes a timing chain coupled to the first and second camshaft sprockets, and the crankshaft sprocket. The timing chain is configured to transmit torque from the crankshaft sprocket to the first and second camshaft sprockets upon rotation of the crankshaft. The engine system further includes a biasing member extending from a first end portion coupled to the first camshaft phaser to a second end portion coupled to the second camshaft phaser to maintain tension on the timing chain between the first and second camshaft phasers.

    Abstract: Apparatus for controlling valve timing in an internal combustion engine locates a first valve port in a first side of the engine cylinder and a second valve port in a second side of the engine cylinder. A first rotating valve disc and a second rotating valve disc are respectively disposed next to the first and second valve port. Each rotating valve disc includes a valve port. Each disc rotates in synchronism with the crankshaft to align its' port with the respective first and second valve ports. A variety of intake devices coupled to the first rotating valve disc control intake air flow into the engine cylinder, and a variety of exhaust devices coupled to the second rotating valve disc control exhaust gas flow from the engine cylinder.

    Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for a cam drive system of an engine. In one example, a front end of an engine includes an idler gear assembly including an idler gear and idler pulley, the idler gear in meshing engagement with a first end of a crankshaft and the idler pulley coupled to and sharing a rotational axis with the idler gear. The front end of the engine may further include first and second camshaft pulleys positioned vertically above the idler gear assembly and a cam drive belt contacting each of the first and second camshaft pulleys and the idler pulley.

    Abstract: A gearbox comprising an input shaft fixed with a first gear, an output shaft fixed with a second gear, and a rim gear without a web or hub rotatably mounted on a shaft having a hollow space. A lubrication line extends from within the shaft to a lubrication space disposed between an inner surface of the rim gear and an outer surface of the shaft. The rim gear is held in place on the shaft by a first interior surface of a first chamber member and a second interior surface of a second chamber member.

    Abstract: A valve timing adjustment device includes: a first rotatable body that is rotated about a rotational axis synchronously with one of a drive shaft and a driven shaft of an engine; and a second rotatable body that is rotated about the rotational axis synchronously with the other one of the drive shaft and the driven shaft. The first rotatable body includes: a fastening portion, a slide portion and a bearing portion. The fastening portion is fastened to the one of the drive shaft and the driven shaft. The bearing portion includes an outer peripheral surface that is opposed to an inner peripheral surface of the second rotatable body, and the bearing portion rotatably supports the second rotatable body. The fastening portion projects on one axial side of the slide portion and the bearing portion in an axial direction toward the one of the drive shaft and the driven shaft.

    Abstract: A control system for internal combustion engines having four valves per cylinder. An inlet valve and an exhaust valve are controlled by a basic camshaft. Another inlet valve and another exhaust valve are controlled by a control camshaft. The two camshafts are connected to a crankshaft and engine torque is managed by an electronic control unit. The system comprises a motor/generator unit, connected to the control camshaft; a differential, connected to the crankshaft and to the control camshaft; a control shaft, connected to the differential; an actuator, connected to the control shaft; a one-way restrictor valve connected to a shut-off valve and to the actuator; an oil circuit, connected to the actuator by means of the shut-off valve and a control solenoid that acts on the shut-off valve.

    Abstract: An internal combustion engine for use with a propeller driven aircraft includes a camshaft adapted to function as an output shaft that rotates a propeller to provide propulsive thrust. A gear set is configured to transfer rotational power from the crankshaft to the camshaft and to rotate the camshaft at a velocity that is proportional to the rotational velocity of the crankshaft. The gear set is disposed rearward of the engine housing rearward wall and is configured to rotate the camshaft in a direction opposite the crankshaft rotation. The length of the camshaft reduces engine torsional vibration. In one embodiment, the engine is a six-cylinder compression ignition engine having a boxer configuration and can generate a peak output power within a range from about 300 horsepower to about 350 horsepower.
