Automated banking machines include a Global Positioning System (GPS). The machines can transmit their GPS location reading to a service center. The service center can receive through a customer's cell phone, a customer request for directions to the nearest card-reading cash-dispensing machine that does not have a transaction fee. The customer request can include account data and GPS location of the cell phone. The service center can determine from the account data which financial networks would not cause the customer to be assessed a transaction fee for a cash withdrawal. The service center can then determine from the GPS locations of the machines in these financial networks, which machine is geographically closest to the phone's GPS location. Directions to this nearest automated banking machine are then sent to the phone.

An automated banking machine is part of a banking system that operates to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records. The machine includes a card reader that operates to read data from user cards corresponding to financial accounts. A card account's status is listed in a data store as either blocked or unblocked for use in approving transactions on the account. A requested transaction on an account cannot be carried out by the machine unless the account has an unblocked status. Read card data is sent from the machine to a remote card security computer which can determine the card account status from the data store. If the account is unblocked, then the machine can continue with the requested transaction and seek transaction approval from a transaction host computer associated with the machine.

Data corresponding to the card data is stored in at least one memory of the terminal. The terminal includes a wireless communication device. The terminal operates to wirelessly communicate data corresponding to card data to one or more remote computers to cause financial transfers to or from selected accounts. The terminal also operates to provide outputs corresponding to account balances and to receive data corresponding to receipts.

A banking system computer can receive a transaction request from a remotely located customer, and then determine the nearest bank in the banking system that is able to process the transaction request. The computer then provides the customer with directions to the bank. Before arrival of the customer at the bank, the computer provides the bank with each of notification of the impending arrival of the customer, transaction information usable by the bank to process the transaction request, and an image of the customer. Personnel at the bank can then recognize and greet the arriving customer.

The system is operative during a cash dispense transaction request to receive through an automated banking machine, user input of data corresponding to a mobile phone number. The system is operative to generate a security code for the requested cash dispense transaction. The system uses the phone number to send the generated security code to the mobile phone. The cash dispense transaction is allowed to proceed only if the system receives machine user input of the sent security code within a predetermined amount of time.

The machine includes a card reader that reads card data from a card of a machine user. The card data is linked in a data store to both a customer's financial account and a cell phone assigned to that customer. In response to the user's transaction request, contact data for the assigned cell phone is determined from the data store using the read card data. A transaction security code is then sent to that cell phone. The transaction is allowed to proceed only if the user inputs the sent security code to the machine within a predetermined amount of time. Transaction allowance may also be based on a real time determination that the assigned cell phone is physically located proximate the machine.

An automated banking machine is provided that selectively controls the booting of the machine for different storage device drives. The machine may include at least one computer. The automated banking machine may also include at least one transaction function device, such as a cash dispenser, in operative connection with the computer. The computer of the machine may include a BIOS setup program with a BIOS program password and at least one BIOS boot password. When no alternative bootable media is detected, the computer is operative to automatically boot from a specified default bootable media. If an alternative bootable media is detected, the computer is operative to prompt a user to input the BIOS boot password. If the inputted password is valid, the computer is operative to boot from the alternative media. If no password is inputted, the computer is operative to automatically boot from the default bootable media.

An automatic banking machine includes at least one computer, a card reader, transaction function devices, and a display. The display includes a touch display surface having multiple spaced user locations at which transaction sessions by different user can be concurrently conducted. Multiple users can at the same time receive visible outputs from the display surface and provide inputs through physical contact with the display surface. An eye sensing device enables the display surface, based on sensing where a user is looking at the display surface, to display data at the user location.

An automated banking machine is operative to enable users to operate the machine to carry out transactions such as the dispensing of cash. The exemplary machine provides audible instructions which are output through external loudspeakers, a headphone, or a handset. Rotation of a rotatable knob (372, 382) or other movable item causes the output of user selectable characters, transaction types and/or amounts corresponding to each respective position. The user selects the audible output produced in the current position of the knob for receipt by the machine as a transaction input by pressing on the knob. Characters and other selectable inputs corresponding to knob positions can be varied by the computer in the machine to reduce the risk of a criminal intercepting the user's inputs to the machine.
