    Abstract: A method for producing an optical film of the present invention includes: (1) a step for obtaining a (meth)acrylic resin by copolymerizing methyl methacrylate and a copolymerizable monomer containing an acryloyl morpholine in the presence of a polymerization initiator and a chain transfer agent; and (2) a step for obtaining an optical film by melt extruding a resin composition that contains the thus-obtained (meth)acrylic resin and a cellulose ester resin at a (meth)acrylic resin:cellulose ester resin ratio of from 95:5 to 30:70. The (meth)acrylic resin obtained in step (1) is characterized in that: (a) the weight average molecular weight (Mw) thereof is from 2.0×104 to 5.0×105; (b) the total amount of the remaining methyl methacrylate and the remaining copolymerizable monomer is 0.05-1% by mass; (c) the amount of the remaining polymerization initiator is 0.01-0.5% by mass; and (d) the amount of the remaining chain transfer agent is 0.01-0.5% by mass.

    Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention generally relate to a moisture barrier coating that is biodegradable and compostable. Some embodiments also relate to a coating that is dual ovenable. Such coatings may be used to increase moisture resistance and provide non-stick or release characteristics when applied to biodegradable and compostable disposable food packaging and food service items. In some embodiments, a plasticizer or an amide wax are added to a cellulose-ester, shellac, and rosin based coating to increase moisture resistance and reduce brittleness. In other embodiments, phospholipids or medium-chain triglycerides or increased levels of amide wax may be added to the either of the embodiments above to provide enhanced release characteristics.

    Abstract: A photodegradable plastic is described, comprising cellulose esters and also, if appropriate, additives. A particular characterizing feature of this photodegradable plastic is that it comprises a dispersed photocatalytic carbon-modified titanium dioxide. Comparative experiments show that this photodegradable plastic exhibits a surprisingly high increase in photocatalytic degradability when compared with products in which a conventional or other modified titanium dioxide is used. This improvement is apparent in particular in use of the photodegradable plastic according to the invention when it is further processed to give moldings. The photodegradable plastic can, for example, first be further processed to give a filter tow. This can be used to produce filter rods, and these can then be used to produce filter plugs for filter-tip cigarettes.
