An oil-soluble alkyl substituted hydroxyaromatic compound, wherein the alkyl-moiety of the aromatic compounds is derived from at least one ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer of greater or above 25,000 to about 5000,000 number average molecular weight, said copolymer containing from 30 to 80 weight percent ethylene and wherein at least about 30% of the polymer's chains contain terminal ethenylidene unsaturation. The Mannich Base condensates of this invention are useful as multifunctional viscosity index improvers for oleaginous compositions, particularly lubricating oil compositions.

An oil soluble dispersant additive useful in oleaginous compositions selected from fuels and lubricating oils comprising the reaction products of:(i) at least one intermediate adduct comprised of the reaction products of(a) at least one polyanhydride, and(b) at least one member selected from the group consisting of polyamines, polyols, and amino alcohols; and(ii) at least one member selected from the group consisting of(a) at least one long chain hydrocarbyl substituted C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid producing material;(b) at least one long chain hydrocarbyl substituted hydroxy aromatic material and at least one aldehyde; or(c) at least one aldehyde and at least one reaction product of a hydrocarbyl substituted C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 monocarboxylic or C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and an amine substituted hydroxy aromatic compound.Also disclosed are oleaginous compositions, particularly lubricating oil compositions, containing these oil soluble dispersants.

When a phenol having substituents in at least the 2- and 4-positions but having a hydrogen atom in the 6-position, or a phenol having substituents in at least the 2- and 6-positions but having a hydrogen atom in the 4-position is reacted with formaldehyde and 1,3-propanediamine, a unique insertion-condensation reaction occurs whereby the product is a hexahydropyrimidine derivative which may be represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is (i) a 2-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions or (ii) a 4-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions; and R.sub.2 is (i) a 2-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions or (ii) a 4-hydroxybenzyl group having an inert substituent (preferably a hydrocarbyl substituent) in at least the 3- and 5-positions or (iii) a hydrogen atom. Uses for such compounds include their use as antioxidants and stabilizers for various substrates, such as fuels, lubricants, and functional fluids.

The present invention is directed to oil-soluble lubricating oil additives comprising Mannich Base condensates of (A) a polymer substituted mono- or dicarboxylic acid material, (B) an optionally alkyl-substituted N-hydroxyaryl compound, (C) an aldehyde, and (D) an amido-amine or thioamido-amine wherein the polymer moiety of the mono- or dicarboxylic acid material is derived from a polymer of 300 to 10,000 number average molecular weight, and wherein the amido-amine and thioamido-amine reactants are derived by reacting polyamines and alpha, beta-unsaturated compounds. The Mannich Base condensates of this invention are useful as dispersants.

Coupled polyamine additives for lubricants, fuels and functional fluids have been discovered. The coupled polyamines are prepared by the cyclization reaction of at least one reactant polyamine reactant with at least one hydrocarbyl polynitrile. This coupled polyamine may be further reacted with a hydrocarbyl carboxylic acid or derivative thereof, a hydrocarbyl phenolic reactant or mixtures thereof to provide an additive having greater oil solubility as well as imparting dispersancy and VI improvement.

The present invention is directed to a fuel additive comprising at least one adduct of (A) a polyolefin of 300 to 10,000 number average molecular weight substituted with at least 0.3 (e.g., from about 1 to 4) mono- or dicarboxylic acid producing moieties (preferably acid or anhydride moieties) per polyolefin molecule, (B) an amido-amine or thioamido-amine characterized by being a reaction product of at least a polyamine and an alpha, beta-unsaturated compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is sulfur or oxygen, Y is --OR.sup.4, --SR.sup.4, or --NR.sup.4 (R.sup.5), and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are the same or different and are hydrogen or substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl.
