Abstract: A rocker arm for a rocker arm assembly of an internal combustion engine. The rocker arm includes a pushrod portion for engaging the distal end of the pushrod and for movement between a raised position and a lowered position, the pushrod portion having a pushrod seat cast thereinto for receiving the distal end of the pushrod; a valve stem portion for engaging the distal end of the valve stem for movement between a raised position and a lowered position; and an intermediate portion fixedly connecting the pushrod portion and the valve stem portion to one another, the rocker arm attachment the pivotally attaching the intermediate portion of the rocker arm to the rocker arm support structure to allow the pushrod portion and the valve stem portion to pivot between the raised and lowered positions.

Abstract: A one-piece, cold-formed rocker arm is disclosed. The rocker arm is of the boat type and includes a one-piece metal body which is cold-formed from a metal blank and is of U-shaped cross-sectional configuration throughout most of its length. The body has a bottom wall with structurally-integral side walls extending upwardly therefrom in generally parallel relationship. An intermediate, concave portion of the bottom wall has an opening therethrough which receives a fulcrum of a pivot post. One end portion of the rocker arm body has a recess to receive an end of a push rod which imparts pivotal motion to the rocker arm about the fulcrum. The other end of the rocker arm body has a pad for engaging an end of a valve stem to impart motion to the valve stem when the rocker arm is pivoted about the fulcrum. Outwardly-extending stiffening flanges are formed at upper edge portions of intermediate portions of the side walls, which provides strength and stiffness to the side walls. The flanges substantially eliminate or at least substantially reduce buckling of the side walls during operation of the rocker arm and thereby eliminate or substantially reduce deflection between the two and portions of the rocker arm body.

Abstract: A low-friction, boat-type rocker arm assembly is provided. The boat-type rocker arm is designed to roll on a fulcrum of a supporting pedestal during operation, rather than slipping or sliding thereon. The rocker arm has a recessed intermediate area of a predetermined radius which is greater than the radius of the fulcrum of the pedestal. The rocker has a rectangular opening in the recessed portion with opposite, transverse edges tapering downwardly and inwardly which fit closely with the pedestal to limit travel of the rocker arm relative to the pedestal. The pedestal also has rounded surfaces at those portions positioned near the tapered edges of the rocker arm opening.

Abstract: A retainer is installed on the pedestals of adjacent rocker arm assemblies to tie the pedestals, rocker arms, and retainer into a permanent subassembly. The retainer includes rectangular apertures for receiving the pedestal shanks which in one direction comprise spring steel tabs which grip the sides of the pedestal shank with high unit loading and in the other direction provide generous clearance to permit axial sliding adjustments of the pedestals relative to each other to align the bolt holes and thus facilitate installation of the subassembly on the engine head. The spring steel tabs further align the pedestals with each other and with the engine and prevent the pedestals from turning when the tie down bolts therethrough is torqued.

Abstract: The device comprises a rocker arm formed with a main bearing surface mounted on a main bearing and further bearing surfaces which co-operate with the upper ends of exhaust and inlet valves and pushrods respectively.
