Abstract: A discrete lost motion device for use in a valve train of an internal combustion engine comprises a housing having a housing bore extending longitudinally into the housing and a second end having a housing contact surface configured to engage a corresponding contact surface of a first valve train component. A plunger slidably is disposed in the housing bore is controllable between a first state in which the plunger rigidly extends out of the housing bore and a second state in which the plunger is permitted to reciprocate within the housing bore, the plunger further comprising an end having a plunger contact surface configured to engage a corresponding contact surface of a second valve train component. The housing contact surface and the plunger contact surface are configured to support the discrete lost motion device between the first and second valve train components.

Abstract: A type II valve train assembly that selectively opens first and second intake valves and first and second exhaust valves is provided. The valve train assembly includes an intake rocker arm assembly and an exhaust rocker arm assembly. The valve train assembly is configurable for operation in any combination of activated and deactivated states of engine braking and cylinder deactivation. The exhaust rocker arm assembly includes a first exhaust rocker arm, a second exhaust rocker arm and an engine brake exhaust rocker arm. A first exhaust HLA is associated with the first exhaust rocker arm. A second exhaust HLA is associated with the second exhaust valve. An exhaust actuation assembly selectively actuates to alter travel of the first and second exhaust HLA's to change a state of cylinder deactivation between activated and deactivated.

Abstract: A double-flow hydraulic support element for a switchable finger lever of a valve train of an internal combustion engine is provided. A piston is arranged in an axial bore of the housing of the support element in an axially movable manner, and the piston includes a hollow cylindrical pressure part and a cup-shaped working part. A head of the pressure part is used as a support for the finger lever and projects beyond the housing edge, and an opening for the flow of a hydraulic medium is formed in the end face of the head. The housing has a first passage and a second passage axially spaced from the first passage for the hydraulic medium. The support element has a hydraulic play compensation device with a ball non-return valve for the finger lever. In order to achieve an optimal actuation of the coupling element, a sleeve which is closed on one side is inserted into the pressing part; the closed end of the sleeve reaches the region of an outer annular groove in a sealing manner below the dome-shaped head of the pressing part; a storage space for supplying the play compensation device with the hydraulic medium is formed radially within and axially outside of the sleeve, in the pressure part, and in the working part of the piston; the storage space is connected to the first passage in the housing via a passage opening in the working part; an actuation space formed between the sleeve and the pressure part of the piston for hydraulically supplying the coupling device is connected to the second passage in the housing via a radial passage opening in the pressure part; and the volume of the storage space is substantially greater than the volume of the actuation space.

Abstract: A variable valve actuation device includes a plurality of valve lifter. Each valve lifter slidable in a lifter support hole between an upper position and a lower position. A valve rest recess communicating with a valve rest chamber opens out at an outer circumferential surface of the valve lifter, and a valve rest supply port of a valve rest passage opens out at an inner circumferential surface of the lifter support hole in such a positional relationship that the valve rest passage and the valve rest chamber communicate with each other when the valve lifter is at the upper position, and continue to communicate with each other until the valve lifter has moved downward to a shut-off position located at a prescribed part of a down stroke from the upper position. The communication between the valve rest passage and the valve rest chamber shut off at the shut-off position.

Abstract: A durable system for controlling variable valve actuation of an engine valve corresponding to a cylinder of an automobile engine. The system includes first and second crowned cams having first and second lift profiles and a rocker arm assembly. The rocker assembly includes a first arm having an end connected to said engine valve, having a high impact roller following the first crowned cam operating the engine valves according to a first lift profile. The rocker arm assembly also includes a second arm having durable slider pads riding on the second crowned cam to operate said engine valve according to a second lift profile. A latch secures the second arm relative to the first arm when in a latched position causing the valve to operate according to a second lift profile. The valve operates according to a first lift profile when the latch is not in the latched position.

Abstract: A system for selectively deactivating engine valves of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The system employs switching rocker assemblies between the valves of the engine and rotating cam lobes. The disclosed design is able to operate using a single cam lobe per valve. The rocker assembly employs a first arm pivotally attached to a second arm at one end. The first arm engages the valve and the second arm has a roller bearing that engages the cam lobe. A latch causes the first and second arm to move in unison following the cam surface when latched. When unlatched, the second arm follows and moves according to the rotating cam surface, but the first arm does not follow and does not actuate the valve, thereby deactivating the cylinder.
