Abstract: An original reading apparatus, including: an original tray on which an original is placed; a conveyance portion configured to convey the original placed on the original tray; a sensor configured to read an original being conveyed by the conveyance portion; and a processor configured to detect an abnormal pixel from image data output from the sensor, wherein the processor is configured to: determine a length of a shadow in a conveyance direction of the original based on the image data, the shadow occurring at a leading edge area of the original; detect a skew feed amount of the original based on the image data; determine a mask area based on the length of the shadow and the skew feed amount; and detect an abnormal pixel from the image data without use of image data in the mask area having been determined.

Abstract: An image scanning system of the present invention uses an image capturing unit moving unidirectionally along an optical axis direction, such that an object is positioned within a range of the depth of field of the image capturing unit. The optical axis direction is perpendicular to a plane, and a platform bearing the object and the plane form an included angle, such that multiple inclined surfaces of the object face the same end of a scanning direction, or such that one of the multiple inclined surfaces is parallel to the plane and other inclined surfaces face the same end of the scanning direction, wherein the scanning direction is parallel to the plane. Therefore, in the process of one-time scan, the scanning height of the image capturing unit only rises unidirectionally or descends unidirectionally and has no turning point, and thus, no backlash problem will happen.

The controller may receive signals corresponding to the media movement from the tracking mechanism, determine, based upon the received signals, a current position of the media, and vary a timing at which the first scan module collects a scan of the section of the media based upon the determined current position of the media.

Abstract: A light guide includes a first exit portion emitting first exiting light, a second exit portion emitting second exiting light in a different direction than the first exiting light, and a reflecting portion reflecting light entering the light guide to each of the first and second exit portions. The first and second exit portions respectively have first and second curved surfaces each having a convex cross section perpendicular to the long axis direction. The second exit portion is connected to the first exit portion in the direction perpendicular to the long axis direction. The reflecting portion is provided, in a plane facing the first exit portion and the second exit portion, at a position shifted in the direction perpendicular to the long axis direction from a position where a normal to the plane passes through a connection portion between the first and second exit portions.

Abstract: An image reading device includes an image processor that generates correction data to be used for shading correction and perform the shading correction using the correction data, and a memory that stores first black correction data to be used for the shading correction in a main scanning direction in a predetermined first position in a predetermined sub-scanning direction. The image processor generates third black data based on an image signal of a second reference plate extending in the sub-scanning direction in a predetermined second position in the main scanning direction, generates black correction data according to the sub-scanning direction based on the first black correction data and the third black data, and performs the shading correction using the black correction data so as to correct density unevenness in the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction caused by an interference between image signals from a plurality of sensors.
