In a method of operating an internal combustion engine, an antioxidant composition is introduced into a combustion chamber of the engine. The antioxidant composition contains (A) a sterically hindered phenol; (B) an alkylene or alkylidene coupled sterically hindered phenol oligomer; (C) a secondary aromatic amine; (D) a reaction product of a hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxy-containing aromatic compound, an aldehyde, and a carboxyl-substituted phenol; or (E) a mixture thereof. The method improves the performance of a lubricating oil of the engine.

The invention therefore provides an additive for improving the cold flow performance of middle distillates, comprising I) at least one paraffin dispersant which is a derivative of a fatty amine, II) at least one block copolymer of the structure (AB)nA or (AB)m, where A represents blocks which are composed of olefinically unsaturated, aromatic monomers, and B represents blocks which are composed of structural elements based on polyolefins and are capable of cocrystallizing with the paraffins precipitating out of the middle distillate in the course of cooling, and n is a number in the range from 1 to 10 and m is a number in the range from 2 to 10.

The invention relates to fuel oils comprising a larger proportion of middle distillates having a sulfur content of at most 350 ppm and an aromatics content of at most 22% by weight, and also a smaller proportion of at least one copolymer of ethylene and vinyl esters, said copolymer containing a) bivalent structural units derived from ethylene of the formula 1 nullCH2nullCH2nullnullnull(1) b) from 5 to 12 mol % of bivalent structural units of the formula 2 1 where R1 is saturated, branched C5-C18-alkyl, and c) from 4 to 13 mol % of bivalent structural units of the formula 3 2 and the sum of the molar proportions of structural units of the formulae 2 and 3 being between 12 and 16 mol %, to the corresponding polymers, and also to their use for improving the cold flow behavior of middle distillates having a sulfur content of at most 350 ppm and an aromatics content of at most 22% by weight.

A novel aviation fuel characterized by having a low freeze point (typically no higher than −40° C.) comprising a mixture of an aviation fuel and a compound selected from at least one member of the group consisting of (1) the reaction product of an alkanol amine with a hydrocarbyl-substituted acylating agent wherein the hydrocarbyl group comprises a substantially linear alkyl or alkenyl group containing an average of about 8 to about 50 carbon atoms; or (2) the reaction product of (a) substantially linear hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent contains an average of about 8 to about 40 carbon atoms with an aldehyde or a source thereof having between 1 to 10 carbon atoms; or (3) aromatic moieties containing from about 1 to 3 aromatic rings wherein the aromatic moieties contains up to three substituents hydrocarbyl substantially linear constituents having from about 1 to 50 carbon atoms and the aromatic moieties are coupled by alkylene groups having 1 to 100 carbon atoms; or (4) an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer having a number average molecular weight of between about 2,500 to 10,000 with a mole percent ethylene to vinyl acetate ratio of between about 65:35 to 85:15.

Novel compounds of the general formula ##STR1## wherein each R.sub.1 is independently a tertiary alkyl group containing from 4 to about 8 carbon atoms and each of X, Y and Z is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbon-based group, provided at least one of X, Y and Z is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least 7 carbon atoms, and wherein R.sub.1 is different from the at least one of X, Y and Z that is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least 7 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is an alkylene or alkylidene group, and n is a number ranging from zero to about 4. Also disclosed are methods for preparing novel phenolic compounds, organic compositions, including lubricants based on oils of lubricating viscosity and fuels based on normally liquid fuels and additive concentrates containing the novel phenolic compounds of this invention.
