    Abstract: A combustion engine valve control camshaft adjusting mechanism includes hydraulically actuated piston members to control the relative rotational position of a pair of camshafts. A locking detent is biased by a spring toward a locking position preventing the adjusting movement of the piston members. Hydraulic pressure is supplied to the detent in a direction opposite the spring to release the locking detent and permit the adjusting mechanism to operate after a predetermined engine warmup phase of up to a few seconds.

    Abstract: A modular rotary discoid valve assembly includes a housing for positioning on an engine the piston and cylinder type. The housing includes an intake passage for conducting a working fluid to the cylinder and an exhaust passage for conducting the working fluid from the cylinder. The housing is formed with an internal cavity which intercepts the intake and exhaust passages, which cavity contains a rotary valve member having a window whose shape and/or angular positions on the disc varies with increasing distance from the disc axis. The window is so positioned that when the member is rotated to a first angular position, the window is located opposite the intake passage whereby the working fluid can flow along the intake passage through the window to the cylinder and when the member is rotated to a second angular position, the window is located opposite the exhaust passage so that the working fluid can flow from the cylinder through the window along the exhaust passage. Thus, the assembly alternately opens and closes the intake and exhaust passages in a periodic manner. Preferably also, the valve assembly includes a throttle bar slidably mounted in the housing parallel to the rotary valve member. The throttle bar has a hole which is positioned opposite the intake passage. The bar is movable toward and away from the axis of the rotary valve member between a first position which places the hole in the throttle bar opposite a radially inner portion of the valve member and a second position which places that hole opposite a radially outer portion of the valve member so that when the valve member is rotated, the open time of the intake passage can be controlled by the position of the throttle bar. A plurality of similar valve assemblies can be positioned adjacent to one another and concatenated so that they all operate in unison to control the working fluid flow to and from all the cylinders of a multi cylinder engine. The assembly is particularly suitable for converting an internal combustion engine so that it operates under steam power. Other applications for the assembly are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A camshaft adjuster mounted between a taut strand and a slack strand of a chain connecting an intake camshaft to an exhaust camshaft has two tensioning shoes which are urged by a spring away from each other and against the inner sides of the chain strands. One tensioning shoe is mounted on a reciprocable piston within which a plunger carrying the other tensioning shoe is slidable against the force of the spring. The piston is moved against the taut strand by pressurization of a pressure chamber through a nonreturn valve and the plunger is moved with the piston so that the taut and slack strands are moved together and compression of the tensioning spring is thereby maintained relatively constant. A damping chamber may be provided with throttling bores in the piston and/or plunger to control the damping effect.

    Abstract: The angular timing relationship of the cams opening and closing the inlet and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine can be varied while the engine is running to improve combustion efficiency. The angular relationship is varied by shifting of idler rollers 78, 80 acting on the camshaft driving timing chain adjusted by providing two cams 108, 110 for the same valve intake 104 so that cam 108 controls opening and cam 110 controls closing. Exhaust valve 105 has its opening controlled by cam 115 and its closing controlled by cam 113. An idler 122 between the two camshafts controlling cams 110 and 115 acts on the timing chain. The timing is also varied by moving the pivot point 104 of the rocker arm 62 to obtain later closing of the inlet and earlier opening of the exhaust valve 46 at high speed.     Abstract: A timing belt drive system for driving the camshafts in internal-combustion engines which provides control of the valve timing and overlap. Slack is provided in the timing belt, and is taken up by movable idler pulleys. The positions of the centers of the idlers are displaceable under external control, as in response to engine speed and intake vacuum. Displacement of the idlers thus operates to change the angular relation between the drive pulley on the crankshaft and the driven pulley on the camshaft, i.e., the valve timing. In dohc engines having separate camshafts for the intake and exhaust valves, the valve ''''overlap'''' is similarly controllable. The system provides higher efficiency over a wider range of speeds, and reduces the emission of pollutants.
