Abstract: A pump having a rotary portion which compels the movement of a fluid by peristaltic compression of resilient tubing containing the fluid includes a roller assembly having at least one roller mounted in the rotary portion of the pump for contact with the resilient tubing. The roller has a range of rotation in contact with the tubing during pump operation. A roller control mechanism is adapted and constructed to stop the roller at a single, predetermined location on the tubing when the pump operation is stopped.

Abstract: A volumetric pump for administering intravenous fluids to a patient comprises a housing having an elongate cavity therein with an open and a closed end. A resilient sheet of material having two branched portions which form a centrally-located aperture is disposed over the open end of the housing. A pump shaft is slidably disposed through the aperture such that one branched portion toward the cavity and the other branched portion extends away from the housing such that a sphincter seal is formed about the shaft. An inlet conduit leading from a fluid source such as an IV bag passes through the housing into the cavity near one end thereof, and an outlet conduit leading to a fluid sink such as a patient passes through the housing from the cavity near the other end thereof. The shaft is driven back and forth in reciprocating motion, inwardly and outwardly of the cavity, to alternately produce a positive pressure forcing fluid out of the outlet conduit to the fluid sink, and a negative pressure forcing fluid from the fluid source through the inlet conduit.

Abstract: A volumetric pump valve for pumps for controlling fluid flow, such as in pumps for administering intravenous fluids, comprises a housing formed with first and second cavities, an inlet conduit leading through the housing into the first cavity, an outlet conduit leading through the housing from the second cavity and a passage between the first and second cavities to allow fluid to flow between them. A resilient sealing means is disposed adjacent the passage for selectively sealing the passage to prevent fluid flow between the cavities during low pressure events in the first cavity such that the fluid flows in the direction of the second cavity. A ball disposed on the side of the resilient sealing means opposite the passage is moveable toward the passage to cause the resilient sealing means to selectively seal the passage.

Abstract: A volumetric pump and fluid control valve system for controlling the flow of fluid which comprises a housing containing an interior cavity, an elongated valve shaft is disposed inside the cavity, and an elongate drive shaft of smaller diameter than the valve shaft connected to one end of the valve shaft. The drive shaft passes through a passage formed in the housing to extend from the cavity to the exterior. A resilient sheet of material having an aperture is disposed in the housing on the exterior side of the passage and the drive shaft passes through the aperture to form a sphincter seal. The drive shaft can be used to move the valve shaft back and forth in a reciprocating motion producing positive and negative pressures causing fluid to flow or merely to stabilize the valve shaft in position. The valve shaft includes two flanges which are spaced apart from one another. The flanges extend at least partially around the circumference of the valve shaft. The drive shaft is disposed in the cavity above the valve shaft and substantially parallel thereto. A tab extends downwardly from the piston sufficiently far to abut either of the flanges when the piston is moved longitudinally a sufficient distance.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for compensating for the deficiency in fluid flow occurring during the refill and piston chamber pump-up cycle of a single piston fluid pump are disclosed. The period of time during which the outlet valve is closed and no fluid is being delivered to the system is determined and the pump is driven at a speed greater than the normal delivery speed for a period of time such that the quantity of excess fluid delivered approximates the quantity of fluid that would have been delivered during the refill and pump-up period had the pump been delivering fluid at its normal delivery rate.

Abstract: A pumping apparatus for delivering liquid at a high pressure, in particular for use in liquid chromatography, comprises two pistons (10, 20) which reciprocate in pump chambers (7,18), respectively. The output of the first pump chamber (7) is connected via a valve (13) to the input of the second pump chamber (18). The pistons are driven by linear drives (30,31), e.g., ball-screw spindles. The stroke volume displaced by the piston (10) is freely adjustable by corresponding control of the angle by which the shaft of the drive motor (36) is rotated during a stroke cycle. The control circuitry is operative to reduce the stroke volume when the flow rate which can be selected by user at the user interface (42) is reduced, thus leading to reduced pulsations in the outflow of the pumping apparatus. The pumping apparatus can also be used for generating solvent gradients when a mixing valve (2) connected to different solvent containers (A,B,C,D) is coupled to the input of the pumping apparatus (FIG. 1).

Abstract: Presented herein are systems and methods for attenuating flow ripple generated by a hydraulic pump. In certain aspects, a method and system for operating a hydraulic positive displacement pump according to a stabilized command profile are disclosed, such that flow ripple generated by operation of the pump according to the stabilized command profile is attenuated as compared to operation of the pump according to a corresponding nominal command profile. In other aspects, a pressure-balanced active buffer is disclosed that allow for at least partially cancelling flow ripple in a hydraulic circuit comprising a pump. In another aspect, a method for generating ripple maps for a pump is disclosed. Such ripple maps may be used, for example, to determine the stabilized command profile used to operate the pump, or may be used by the pressure-balanced active buffer to counteract ripple in the hydraulic circuit.
