Abstract:
Graft copolymers of .epsilon.-caprolactam are made by a process in which .epsilon.-caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of a copolymer of an aliphatic acrylate and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, such as n-butylacrylate and acrylic acid. Such grafted polymers which have nylon-6 side chains grafted onto the acrylate polymer backbone are useful as hot melt adhesives. In the process for preparing these polymers, the backbone polymer is formed initially by solution polymerization at a moderate temperature and the .epsilon.-caprolactam is then added and the temperature increased in the presence of an acidic catalyst. .epsilon.-Caprolactam can be used as the solvent in the polymerization of the backbone polymer.

Polymeric compositions are disclosed containing miscible blends of copolymers, one of which is a vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer containing about 5 to 30 weight percent ethylene and the other is a copolymer of either acrylic acid or a maleic anhydride with a comonomer selected from styrene, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. Windows of miscibility for each of the copolymer blends have been defined and the blends can be advantageously formed by polymerizing the acrylic acid copolymer in the presence of an emulsion of the vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in such a way that the polymerization takes place in the suspended vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer rather than in the aqueous phase.

This invention is directed to novel crystalline chain extended polymers containing segments of crystalline poly(aryl ether ketones). The novel materials are easy to prepare and display excellent toughness, fabricability and very good high temperature and solvent resistance.

Described herein is the addition of polyhydroxyethers to blends of polyarylate and polyamide. The resulting blend results in significant increases in ultimate elongation, tensile strength, notched izod impact strength, tensile impact strength, and injection molded material uniformity.
