    Abstract: The invention described herein is a process for the purification of carbon. That process provides for the treatment of carbon with hydrofluoric acid, or a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid, followed in each case by treatment with hot aqueous hydrochloric acid. The carbon thus purified is notably effective for use as electrode material in a demineralization cell, i.e., one used for the demineralization of water.

    Abstract: A high capacitance low voltage electrolytic capacitor consists essentially of a pair of paste electrodes and a separator saturated with electrolyte which functions as an electronic insulator and an ionic conductor. One of said paste electrodes is composed of active carbon and the opposing paste electrode is composed of a powdered metal selected from the group consisting of copper, nickel, cadmium, zinc, iron, manganese, lead, magnesium, titanium, silver, cobalt, indium, selenium and tellurium, said electrodes being prepared by mixing finely divided particulate material of the above electrode materials with electrolyte to form a viscous paste and compressing the paste to form the electrodes.
