Abstract: This invention relates to a novel method for small sample preparation using a tube or column, such as a pipette tip, in which the interior surface is coated with a solid matrix for sample preparation. Said solid matrix is composed of a polymeric substance such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and one or more column materials such as reactive or absorptive materials suited for sample filtration, separation or purification. The desired sample, containing bio-molecules such as DNA, proteins or other molecular components, is passed through said tube or column, which may be a pipette tip, or like structure.

Abstract: An improved inclusive method for purifying a polar solvent such as water includes the re-suspension of finely divided layered materials within which contaminants have been captured, wherein the re-suspension is in a solvent selected primarily on the basis of its ability to re-suspend the finely divided layered materials and/or for its effect on the included contaminant material, and within which additional materials may or may not be intentionally dissolved, mixed, or suspended, in order to recover and reuse the finely divided layered material and/or to selectively recover a specific included contaminant or several specific included contaminants in series. The process is useful in the rapid and efficient recovery of the finely divided layered materials, and in the removal of suspended particles, dissolved materials, immiscible liquids, and living organisms from the polar solvent.

Abstract: A multiple metal oxide sorbent supported on a zeolite of substantially silicon oxide is used for the desulfurization of process gas streams, such as from a coal gasifier, at temperatures in the range of about 1200.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. The sorbent is provided by a mixture of copper oxide and manganese oxide and preferably such a mixture with molybdenum oxide. The manganese oxide and the molybdenum are believed to function as promoters for the reaction of hydrogen sulfide with copper oxide. Also, the manganese oxide inhibits the volatilization of the molybdenum oxide at the higher temperatures.

Abstract: Rapid-gelling binder vehicles are produced by admixing a small amount of a water-soluble alkaline ionic silicate with a colloidal amorphous silica aquasol and adjusting the resulting composition to a pH of from 5 to 9.5. The amount of alkaline ionic silicate added is within the range of from 0.083 to 1.67 moles per 1000 grams of binder vehicle exclusive of silica and is dependent on the concentration and median particle diameter of the colloidal silica, the concentration of neutral salts and the pH to which the composition is to be adjusted. A binder vehicle prepared in this manner gels within from 5 to 300 seconds to form a gel structure having an exceptionally high porosity, wide pore diameters and high strength and attrition resistance.
