Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a method and system for optimizing mirror creation. The method includes receiving, within an electronic system, a request for creating a mirror of a portion of a volume and accessing a data structure comprising information about a plurality of regions of the volume. The method further includes determining a plurality of regions comprising non-zeros of the volume based on the data structure and copying only the plurality of regions comprising non-zeros to create the mirror.

Abstract: Notification routines are described for implementation by a monitoring service. As part of an exemplary notification routine, a faulty storage volume is correlated at multiple logical storage levels of a storage system with other faulty storage volumes. The correlation pattern can follow a tree-based decision format, where each faulty storage volume is sequentially compared at a lower logical storage level. Advantageously, once a common logical storage component of a group of storage volumes is identified, a notification is issued about the group of faulty storage volumes sharing the common logical storage component. Additionally, notifications can be issued according to a severity level of the group of faulty storage volumes. In some embodiments, before issuing the notification, the group of faulty storage volumes can be compared to a time allowed for the group of faulty storage volume to be at fault.

A ghost host computer is a fictitious construct based on a physical host computer. The results of the power management analysis may then be used as a cluster capacity recommendation to increase resource capacity of the cluster of host computers.

Abstract: A method of and system for managing spaces in memory of a storage facility is disclosed. The method and system includes storing first and second identifiers in first and second spaces in memory in response to allocating the second space for a set of data. The first identifier is stored in a first field within the first space. The first space has a pointer in a second field. The pointer in the second field indicates an address of the second space. The second identifier is stored within a portion of the second space. In response to an error event, the first and second identifiers may be captured. A determination is made as to whether the pointer is directed to the set of data. The determination is based on a comparison of the first identifier and the second identifier.

Abstract: A computer system comprises a processor unit arranged to run a hypervisor running one or more virtual machines; a cache connected to the processor unit and comprising a plurality of cache rows, each cache row comprising a memory address, a cache line and an image modification flag; and a memory connected to the cache and arranged to store an image of at least one virtual machine. The processor unit is arranged to define a log in the memory and the cache further comprises a cache controller arranged to set the image modification flag for a cache line modified by a virtual machine being backed up, but not for a cache line modified by the hypervisor operating in privilege mode; periodically check the image modification flags; and write only the memory address of the flagged cache rows in the defined log.

Abstract: A group of computers is configured to implement a block storage service. The block storage service includes a block-level storage for storing data from a set of distinct computing instances for a set of distinct users. An interface is configured to allow the set of distinct users to specify respective destinations for storing backup copies of respective data stored in the block-level storage for the distinct users. At least some of the respective destinations are for different storage systems remote from one another. A backup copy function is provided for creating backup copies of data stored in the block-level storage by the set of distinct computing instances for the set of distinct users. The backup copies are stored in different destination locations specified by respective ones of the plurality of distinct users via the interface.

Abstract: Example data storage systems and methods are described. In one implementation, a method identifies data to be written to a shared storage system that includes multiple storage nodes. The method communicates a write operation vote request to each of the multiple storage nodes. The write operation vote request is associated with a data write operation to write the identified data to the shared storage system. A positive response is received from at least a portion of the multiple storage nodes. The data write operation is initiated in response to receiving positive responses from a quorum of the storage nodes.

Abstract: A computer system maintains identifiers that identify changed blocks of virtual machine (VM) storage. The computer system accesses a stable VM checkpoint comprising a restorable VM image at a time, and that stores a representation of data of at least one block as it existed at the time. The computer system converts the checkpoint to a reference point. Reference point information is transferable with the VM, such that if the VM is moved to a different computing system, any data identified by the reference point is recoverable. The conversion includes querying the storage to determine an identifier corresponding to the block of the checkpoint at the time, storing this identifier as a part of the reference point, and releasing the representation of the data of the block from the checkpoint. The computer system then uses the reference point to identify changes in the blocks of the storage since the time.
