Compositions for coating steel wire to facilitate the cold drawing thereof comprising:A. from about 50 to about 99.9% by weight of K.sub.2 SO.sub.4 ;B. from about 0 to about 49.99% by weight of K.sub.2 B.sub.4 O.sub.7 and/or KBO.sub.2 ; andC. from about 0.01 to about 5% by weight of an ammonium and/or a potassium soap; wherein up to 50% by weight of the total potassium plus ammonium ions in the composition can be replaced by sodium ions. These compositions form coatings which have good crystalline structure and drawability with low hygroscopicity.

A diurea grease composition contains a base oil and 2 to 25 wt.%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a diurea compound, the diurea grease compound being produced by reacting a mixed system of two or more different diisocyanates represented by the formula (I) OCN--R--NCO wherein R stands for a straight-chained or branched alkylene group, a straight-chained or branched alkenylene group, a cycloalkylene group or an aromatic group, with an amine compound selected from the group consisting of a primary amine represented by the formula (II) R.sub.1 --NH.sub.2 wherein R.sub.1 stands for a hydrocarbon residue having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, a secondary amine represented by the formula (III) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 each stand for hydrocarbon residues having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and mixtures thereof.

The electroviscous fluid is a suspension composed of a finely divided dielectric solid dispersed in an electrically nonconductive oil. Viscosity of the fluid increases swiftly and reversibly under an influence of electric field applied thereto and the fluid turns to a state of plastic or solid when the influence is sufficiently strong.The electroviscous fluid of the present invention comprises(A) 1-60% by weight of a dispersed phase composed of hygroscopic inorganic particles having an average particle size of 0.01-20 micrometer and regulated to a water content of 0.1-10% by weight and adsorbing a high boiling point liquid polar compound, and(B) 99-40% by weight of a liquid phase of an electric insulating oil having a viscosity 0.65-500 centistokes at room temperature.The electroviscous fluid exhibits an excellent electroviscous effect for a long period of time with a low electric power consumption together with a quick response at the application and cancellation of an electric potential difference.

The front-wheel drive grease has excellent extreme pressure properties and antiwear qualities and is economical, nontoxic and safe. In the pereferred form, the front-wheel drive grease comprises a base oil, a polyurea thickener, and an additive package comprising tricalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.

A new water-base lubricant composition has been discovered which is uniquely suitable for elevated temperature metal forming operations. The water-base lubricant invention herein generally comprises, about 1% to about 40% by weight of a polycarboxylic acid salt reaction product, such as trimellitic acid and an alkali metal or an alkali earth metal hydroxide, such that the pH of the composition is about 6.5 to about 10; about 0.1% to about 12% by weight of a water dispersible thickening agent; and the balance water. The water-base lubricant may also include extreme pressure additives, performance enhancers, and biocidal agents. Also disclosed is a process for using the above-described water-base lubricant composition.
