Abstract: A method, computer program product, computing system, and system for virtual machine backup are described. In part, the disclosure relates to methods and systems for performing backup of virtual machine files on a block level that include features that allow a user to select and backup specific files or folders of file systems of a VM. The specificity and selectivity features by which certain files or folders are backup from a file system of a VM can be implemented by processing one or more partition structures of a virtual disk of a virtual machine. Once the partition structures have been processed and analyzed using a backup up software application, it is then possible to detect and process guest file systems of the VM.

Abstract: An example apparatus includes a virtual drive controller module to receive a read request from a guest virtual machine (VM) during a restore operation. The apparatus also includes a virtual drive manager module to determine whether data associated with the read request is stored in a storage volume of the guest VM using a sector mapping lookup table during the restore operation. In response to a determination that the data is absent in the storage volume, the virtual drive manager module is to copy the data from a backup image associated with the guest VM to the storage volume, update the sector mapping lookup table to indicate that the data is stored in the storage volume, and transmit the data to the guest VM.

Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for data unit classification in accordance with one embodiment of the present description, in which in response to a data processing command, a storage controller classifies data units of a storage unit as either allocated to a data set or as unallocated to any data set. If allocated to a data set, the storage controller can further classify data set-allocated data units as either containing client data or metadata or as empty. In accordance with one aspect of the present description, the storage controller may bypass data processing of the data units which have not been allocated to any data set or otherwise do not contain client data or metadata. Other aspects of data unit classification in accordance with the present description are described.

Abstract: Restarting virtual machines is provided. Each server in a plurality of servers is monitored within a client virtual machine host environment via a network. In response to determining that a server failed in the plurality of servers within the client virtual machine host environment, a list of virtual machines that were executing in the failed server is retrieved. A set of virtual machine dependency groups for virtual machines in the list of virtual machines is retrieved based on properties corresponding to each respective virtual machine in the list of virtual machines. The set of virtual machine dependency groups is restarted in parallel on a failover server of an alternate virtual machine host environment via the network.

Abstract: Methods and systems to evaluate importance of metrics generated in a data center and ranking metric in order of relevance to data center performance are described. Methods collect sets of metric data generated in a data center over a period of time and categorize each set of metric data as being of high importance, medium importance, or low importance. Abstract: A checkpointing method in a network device fault tolerant system using virtual machines. In one embodiment, the network device has an input port, an output port, an active virtual machine and a standby virtual machine, a network application on the active virtual machine which manipulates data present on the input port and transmits the manipulated data from the output port; a checkpoint engine on the active virtual machine; and an interface agent, on the active virtual machine, having callable functions to move data from the input port to the output port. The method includes the steps of determining, by the checkpoint engine, that a checkpoint is required; requesting by the checkpoint engine that the interface agent quiescent itself; returning, by the interface agent to the network application, an indicator that no packets are available regardless of whether or not packets are arriving at the input port.

Abstract: A system for proactive resource reservation for protecting virtual machines. The system includes a cluster of hosts, wherein the cluster of hosts includes a master host, a first slave host, and one or more other slave hosts, and wherein the first slave host executes one or more virtual machines thereon. The first slave host is configured to identify a failure that impacts an ability of the one or more virtual machines to provide service, and calculate a list of impacted virtual machines. The master host is configured to receive a request to reserve resources on another host in the cluster of hosts to enable the impacted one or more virtual machines to failover, calculate a resource capacity among the cluster of hosts, determine whether the calculated resource capacity is sufficient to reserve the resources, and send an indication as to whether the resources are reserved.

Abstract: A method of increasing integrity associated with a computer network, which includes determining a model operational parameter associated with an application operating at a predetermined integrity level on the computer network, the model operational parameter is associated with operation of a layer above the agent layer as the application operates at the predetermined integrity level and interacts with the layer above the agent layer, generating an operational model associated with the application performing at the predetermined integrity level, detecting a current operational parameter associated with the application operating at a current integrity level on the computer network, determining an exception associated with the operational model based on a comparison between the model operational parameter and the current operational parameter, and generating an instruction from the agent layer to resolve the exception, thereby increasing integrity of the computer network. A corresponding system and computer-readable device are also disclosed.

Abstract: A data storage system has at least two universal nodes each having CPU resources, memory resources, network interface resources, and a storage virtualizer. A system controller communicates with all of the nodes. Each storage virtualizer in each universal node is allocated by the system controller a number of storage provider resources that it manages. The system controller maintains a map for dependency of virtual appliances to storage providers, and the storage virtualizer provides storage to its dependent virtual appliances either locally or through a network protocol (N_IOC, S_IOC) to another universal node. The storage virtualizer manages storage providers and is tolerant to fault conditions. The storage virtualizer can migrate from any one universal node to any other universal node.
