Abstract: A process for treating a substrate such as glass or wood to provide the appearance of concrete. One or more coats of a polymeric cementitious material is thinly spread over the substrate. Colorants may be added or the coating may be stained subsequent to drying. Designs may be impressed or applied to the coating. The completed article may be used for decorative and architectural items such as table tops. In one embodiment a design is marked off with tape prior to applying the cementitious material.

Abstract: A coating apparatus and method are disclosed in which even if poor coating occurs in a lower-layer, no poor coating occurs in an upper-layer formed on the lower-layer. A pre-wet liquid coating device is disposed between a first coating device at the upstream side of a support web conveying direction, and a second coating device disposed at the downstream side. When an uncoated portion is formed by the first coating device, a pre-wet liquid is coated by a pre-wet liquid coating device, and the coating liquid can be reliably coated by the second coating device. When the pre-wet liquid coating device is removed from the support web, first, the pre-wet liquid coating device is brought into liquid-running out state, and thereafter, removed from the support web. Accordingly, the pool of pre-wet liquid is eliminated and occurrence of a thickly coated portion on the support web can be prevented.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved protective composition and method. The protective composition uses near equal amounts by weight or volume of a pre-polymer and curative. The mixture is applied by a portable spray apparatus using a mixing spray nozzle. For temporary protective coatings using the present invention, a releasing agent is applied to the surface to be protected. The present invention is ideally suited to protect bath tubs, whirlpools, shower stalls, shower pans, tile, marble, glass, metal, hardwoods, other smooth, non-porous surfaces, and the like. The resulting protective coat from the present invention is impenetrable to ladders, boots, sheet rock, mud, paint, dirt, metal pieces, rocks, gravel, sand, grime which might accompany work on or around the protected surface. The present invention also provides a means to avoid scratching, nicking, marring, chipping, staining, painting, and abrading, from these and a multitude of other external forces or objects. As a permanent coating, the present invention can guard against weather, water, sun damage, wind damage, or provide attributes specifically needed on certain surfaces such as improved traction for wet or water-exposed surfaces.

Abstract: A patterned molecular self-assembly is provided. The patterned molecular self-assembly comprises a support having an exposed patterned surface and a non-patterned surface. A compound is selectively adsorbed on the exposed patterned surface. The compound may comprise a first compound selectively adsorbed on the exposed patterned surface and a second compound selectively adsorbed on the first compound to form at least one bilayer. The patterned molecular self-assembly may further comprise a first set of bilayers and a second set of bilayers wherein the first set of bilayers has a different composition than the second set of bilayers.

Abstract: An enhancement composition and a method for its use in a molding process. The enhancement composition is applied to the interior surfaces of the mold cavity used in a molding process such as blow molding, injection molding, thermoforming or rotational molding. The enhancement composition is applied prior to closing of the mold and molding of the plastic article. The enhancement composition comprises a liquid carrier containing up to about 50 weight percent of enhancement solids which comprise a mixture of an enhancement solid such as particles of varied thermoplastic and thermosetting resins, metal flakes, glass beads, carbon, graphite, etc., and a binder solid which can be a hydrocarbon resin, wax, rosin or terpene base resin. The invention provides for almost unlimited modification of the surfaces of molded plastic products, offering the plastics fabricator the ability to mold products having very specialized surface properties with a low cost structural polymer, e.g., a product molded of low cost, low density polyethylene having the surface characteristics of Teflon.

Abstract: A resin product has a body made of a resin. The body has an outer surface including an ornamental surface and an unornamental surface, a first area defined on the outer surface, and a chemical plating layer and an electroplating layer respectively formed on the first area. A process for producing the resin product comprises the step of making a first boundary along a contour of the first area located on the ornamental surface, and the step of making a second boundary along a contour of the first area located on the unornamental surface. The step of making the second boundary includes forming a resist layer on the unornamental surface. The resist layer has a resistivity to a chemical plating solution for making the chemical plating layer. The process also includes the step of forming the chemical plating layer on the outer surface of the body except a part of the first boundary and the resist layer by chemical plating the body, and the step of selectively forming the electroplating layer on the chemical plating layer within the first area.
