Abstract: Embodiments are disclosed for improving safety with parking brake actuation. In particular, embodiments inhibit or allow parking brake commands based on an operation state of a vehicle. Further, embodiments act on parking brake commands based on a health or condition of the parking brakes themselves. An example method for autonomous operation of a vehicle includes receiving a command to apply a parking brake of the vehicle; determining a vehicle operation state based on comparing a speed of the vehicle to a range of pre-determined values; configuring an instruction for engagement of the parking brake according to the vehicle operation state; determining a brake health of the parking brake; and transmitting the instruction to the parking brake to cause the parking brake to be engaged based on the brake health satisfying one or more thresholds.

Abstract: A system for remote actuation of a parking brake upon a driver exit of a specially-equipped vehicle. The system includes a control module having a pressure-releasing valve which can be opened and closed between an air braking system and parking brake control button. Vehicles with a parking brake control button coupled to an air braking system engage a parking brake upon a drop in pressure of the system to a specified point. Upon a driver's exit of the vehicle, the control valve opens the pressure-releasing valve, causing the control valve to engage the vehicle parking brake. A remote actuation device configured to be with the driver of the vehicle and to indicate to the module when the driver exits the vehicle such that the module causes the air braking system to set the parking brake if not already set. A method of automatically engaging a vehicle parking brake.

The parking brake apparatus also comprises a second controller arranged to provide one or more control signals to be applied to other components of the parking brake system to apply the parking brake in response to unavailability of the first controller to cause the parking brake to be applied.

In some embodiments, the autonomous yard tractor can include a sensor system configured to detect the position of the trailer relative to, for example, the tractor, and/or the dock station can include a sensor system configured to detect the position of the trailer relative to, for example, the dock station during a docking procedure.

Abstract: A method of preventing an automatic transmission vehicle from rolling downward on a hill is provided. The method includes determining whether the vehicle travels normally or abnormally on the hill based on a gradient measured by a G sensor and a direction of a wheel measured by a wheel sensor. A controller is maintained in an off state when the vehicle travels normally based on driver intention. The method further includes determining whether to operate the controller by determining a difference in wheel speed between a front wheel and a rear wheel of the vehicle when the vehicle travels abnormally as the vehicle rolls downward.
