An antiwear additive has an alkali metal borate; and a thiadiazole compound. That thiadiazole compound may be a 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, a 2-alkylpolythio-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, or a 2-alkylestermercapto-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole. If the thiadiazole compound is a 2-alkylpolythio-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or a 2-alkylestermercapto-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, the alkyl group has from one to twenty carbon atoms. If the thiadiazole compound is a 2-alkylpolythio-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, the polythio group has from two to eight sulfur atoms. This antiwear additive can be used with a base grease in a grease composition.

A rock bit grease composition is prepared by combining synthetic polymer lubricant basestocks comprising a first ethylene-alphaolefin polymer having an average molecular weight in the range of from 3,500 to 4,000, and a polyisobutylene polymer to form a first master. A metal complex soap base thickener is prepared by combining a synthetic polymer lubricant basestocks comprising a second ethylene-alphaolefin having an average molecular weight in the range of from 400 to 800, with an alkali-metal or alkaline-earth metal hydroxide, and at least one fatty acid. A preferred fatty acid is a blend of a first fatty acid having in the range of from 15 to 20 carbon atoms, and a second fatty acid having in the range of from 5 to 12 carbon atoms. The first master and metal complex soap base thickener are mixed together in desired proportions. Boron nitride extreme pressure agent, molybdenum disulfide lubricant additive, and copper powder anti-seize agent are added to the mixture to produce a grease composition having a Brookfield viscosity at 120.degree. C. in the range of from 600 to 750 centipoise, that is not harmful to elastomeric rock bit seals and boots, and that is free of metal lubricant additives that are toxic to humans and/or hazardous to the environment.

A grease composition for construction equipment comprises a lubricating grease, a) 1 to 5% by weight of phosphate glass and b) 1 to 5% by weight of a sulfur-phosphorus extreme-pressure additive; as well as c) 0.5 to 3% by weight of an aromatic sulfonic acid salt and d) 0.1 to 3% by weight of a triazole compound as optional components based on the total weight of the grease composition. The grease composition exhibits considerably high resistance to load and accordingly, can be applied to construction equipment which require high resistance to load, such as a hydrauric excavator and a wheel loader.

A method of making a novel lubricant additive comprising a boric acid modified aminoamide compound is disclosed. A lubricating oil composition incorporating the modified aminoamide compound is also disclosed, which exhibits enhanced high-temperature cleanliness when used particularly for two stroke cycle engines.

A method of manufacturing a galvanized steel sheet with high press formability, the sheet having an inorganic compound on a metallic galvanized-layer thereof. The method includes the step of effecting a galvanization on a steel sheet followed by an alloying treatment. The sheet of galvanized steel is immersed in a bath of an aqueous solution containing 0.1 wt % or more of borate of an alkali metal, and then taking the steel sheet out of the bath and effecting such control as to make the amount of deposition of the water-containing borate film on the steel sheet surface to range from 10 to 1,000 mg/m.sup.2, and then heating the steel sheet at a temperature ranging from 60.degree. to 400.degree. C. Thereafter, the steel sheet is cooled to a normal temperature.

Friction modifiers are composition which modify the coefficient of friction between surfaces to which the friction modifier is applied. They are similar in nature to lubricants but have different characteristics in certain respects. The invention relates particularly to solid friction modifiers which may be rigid or flexible. These friction modifiers comprise 20-80% by weight of a polymer medium, 5-20% by weight of a solid lubricant and 15-60% by weight of a friction enhancer. The composition produces a coefficient of friction which rises to above 0.20 at creepage level up to 2.5% between steel bodies in rolling-sliding contact lubricated using the composition.

Iron-based metallurgical powder compositions are produced by mixing iron-based powder with an improved binder/lubricant that comprises dibasic organic acid and one or more additional components such as solid polyethers, liquid polyethers, and acrylic resin. These novel binder/lubricants impart one or more enhanced green properties to the powder compositions and reduce the ejection force required to remove the compositions from molds and dies.

A process for upgrading technical low grade cerium/fluorine-containing residues having concentrations of silicon and iron above about 1.0 weight percent produces compositions wherein the combined silicon and iron content is less than about 1.0 weight percent. Typically, the cerium content is raised to above about 50 weight percent and sufficient fluorine is present for the fluorine-to-cerium molar ratio to be 3.0 or above. Lubricating compositions comprising a major part of a lubricant and a minor amount of said upgraded cerium/fluorine-containing residue are useful as anti-wear lubricants.
