Abstract:
The following procedures are included: a procedure (1) for measuring a metallic paint color by a multi-angle spectrophotometer and storing the multi-angle colorimetric value Lab* of the paint color, a color classification code to which the paint color belongs, and a computer graphic image in a memory of a computer and a procedure (2) for calling a metallic paint color to be retrieved (this is referred to as the metallic paint color concerned) from the memory by using a paint color name as a keyword. Moreover, in the case of a new color not stored in the memory, the color is measured by a multi-angle spectrophotometer and stored in the memory in accordance with the procedure (1). A screening function (3) is included which previously narrows down paint colors whose approximate colors will be computed by using color classification codes when computing an approximate color of the metallic color concerned.
Abstract:
A method for characterizing a coating comprising a pigment and metallic flakes, said method by directing beams of light toward a coating; measuring the reflectance of light from the coating at the specular angle; measuring the reflectance of light from the coating at one or moren on-specular angles; analyzing said measured light at the specular and non-specular angles as a function of wavelength; and determining the K/S of the pigment and the volume fraction of said metal flakes within the coating from the measurements of the specular and non-specular reflectance; wherein K is the absorption cross-section of the pigment multiplied by its volume concentration; and S is the scattering cross-section of the pigment multiplied by its volume concentration.
Abstract:
A device and method for grading gemstones. The device utilizes an band pass filter and detector array to obtain the spectral response of a complete image. The gemstone is illuminated in a way that provides for analysis of both reflected and transmitted light. The device utilizes multiple lighting angles to construct an composite image that is used to perform the grading of the gemstone. The device provides spectral photometric data for each individual pixel of the image, or any portion of the gemstone image.
Abstract:
An apparatus for measuring a characteristic of an object, the apparatus includes: a light projector which projects light to an object; a photosensor which senses light which has been projected by the light projector and reflected from the object; a calculator which calculates a characteristic of the object based on an output of the photosensor; an angle detector which detects respective angles of the light projector and the photosensor with respect to the object; an adjustment mechanism which adjusts the respective angles of the light projector and the photosensor; and a controller which controls the adjustment mechanism based on a detection result of the angle detector so that the light projector and the photosensor come into their respective desired angles.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a device for use in chromatometry of samples, viz.olored surfaces, by measurement of reflectance. It comprises a testing head having a measuring cell and a measuring surface. The measuring cell is provided in each of five radial planes with three optical fibre bundles for irradiation of the sample, said optical fibre bundles being disposed at three different angles of e.g. 15.degree., 30.degree. and 70.degree. to the measuring surface. In the center at the top of the measuring cell there is also provided an optical fibre bundle oriented perpendicular to the measuring surface and intended to divert the radiation reflected from the sample. According to the invention a switching system is provided which permits selectively to turn on or off a part of the total number of optical light guide means, especially in accordance with a plurality of preselectable programmes. The device according to the invention, which comprises a portable testing head, is particularly intended for color measurements of the paint or enamel on passenger car bodies and/or measuring structural paints or enamels and/or such paints containing metal particles.
Abstract:
An improved method for instrumentally characterizing the optical properties of a surface containing metallic particles such as a paint containing metallic flakes by using multiangular spectrophotometric or colormetric measurements to derive color constants for the paint, wherein the improvement comprises using three multiangular measurements, preferably 15.degree., 45.degree. and 110.degree. as measured from the specular angle.
Abstract:
A spectrophotometer multi-angle viewing device with a housing and holders for a test panel and reference standard. The holders allow rotation of a reference standard 360* in a vertical plane and rotation of a test panel 360* in a vertical plane and + OR 45* from the horizontal in a vertical plane perpendicular to the vertical plane in which the 360* rotation is possible.
Abstract:
A computing system and associated methodology of evaluating and matching colored sparkle appearance of coatings containing at least one effect pigment type are disclosed. The methodology processes a digital image of a coating sample obtain pixel-specific sparkle point data and pixel-specific background data, both of which are formatted in accordance with an advanced color appearance model that corresponds to human color perception. A colored sparkle visual scaling value is calculated from the pixel-specific data, wherein the visual scaling value indicates colored sparkle characteristics of the coating sample. The visual scaling value of the coating sample is compared against the visual scaling value of a previously-characterized candidate coating specimen. The results of the comparison are used to determine how well the candidate coating specimen matches (in colored sparkle characteristics) the coating sample.
Abstract:
Disclosed in a method, a user interface and a system for use in determining shade of a patient's tooth, wherein a digital 3D representation including shape data and texture data for the tooth is obtained. A tooth shade value for at least one point on the tooth is determined based on the texture data of the corresponding point of the digital 3D representation and on known texture values of one or more reference tooth shade values.
