    Abstract: A process is described for making an aqueous coating composition comprising a cationic vinyl oligomer comprising the following steps: I. preparation of a cationic vinyl oligomer by solution or bulk polymerization of components: i) 2 to 50 wt % of vinyl monomers bearing amine functional groups selected from the group consisting of non-ionic amine functional groups (a), permanent quaternary ammonium functional groups (b), neutralized amine functional groups (c) and mixtures thereof; and ii) 20 to 98 wt % of Ci to Ci8 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and II. dispersion of the cationic vinyl oligomer in an aqueous medium and neutralization of non-ionic amine functional groups.

    Abstract: An aqueous coating composition comprising: (i) (10) to (80) wt % of a polyurethane A which exhibits a minimum film forming temperature of ≦ambient temperature and which comprises a polyurethane obtained by the reaction of: (a) an isocyanate-terminated pre-polymer formed from components which comprise: (1) 10 to 30 wt % of a polyisocyanate; (2) 0.1 to 10 wt % of a polyol of weight average molecular weight less than 500, containing ionic or potentially ionic water-dispersing groups, and having two or more isocyanate-reactive groups; (3) 0 to 15 wt % of a polyol containing non-ionic water dispersing groups having two or more isocyanate-reactive groups; (4) 40 to 80 wt % of a polyol other than (2) or (3), having two or more isocyanate-reactive groups; where (1), (2), (3) and (4) add up to 100%; and (b) an active-hydrogen chain extending compound; and (ii) 20 to 90 wt % of a polymer dispersion B which exhibits a minimum film forming temperature of above ambient temperature; wherein (i) and (ii) add up to 100%. Processes for manufacture of said composition and methods of application to substrates are also described.

    Abstract: Aqueous polymer dispersion containing a water-dispersed polyurethane polymer and a vinyl (preferably acrylic) polymer in a weight ratio of from 30/70 to 5/95, wherein said polyurethane polymer is the reaction product of: A) an isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer having an acid value of ≧44 mg KOH/g of prepolymer (solids) and formed from reactants comprising an organic polyisocyanate component and an organic poly(isocyanate-reactive) group) component in which the isocyanate-reactive groups are selected from —OH and optionally one or more of —NH2, —NH—, and —SH (usually a polyol), wherein i) at least 70 weight % of said polyisocyanate component is constituted by at least one aliphatic polyisocyanate, ii) said poly(isocyanate-reactive group) component includes at least one acid-bearing poly(isocyanate-reactive group) compound for providing anionic groups which provide or contribute to water-dispersibility, iii) the reactants are used in amounts corresponding to a ratio of isocyanate groups to isocyanate-reactive groups (usually hydroxyl) within the range of 1.4/1 to 2.9/1; and B) an active hydrogen chain-extending compound(s).
