The present invention relates to a one-component system based on coreactive latexes which is able to lead to coatings which are crosslinkable at low temperature and post-crosslinkable by heat treatment, the said system consisting of a mixture of two particle dispersions, (A) and (B), each obtained by aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomer composition A and B, respectively,(a) at least one free-radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising a functional group ##STR1## where X represents O or S, which enters into the monomer composition A; and(b) at least one free-radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising an N-alkylol or masked N-alkylol functional group which enters into the monomer composition B.

High-performance overprint varnishes, well-suited for the protective coating of a wide variety of substrates, e.g., papers, cardboards and packaging materials, include a composite latex and characteristically a polyethylene wax emulsion, the composite latex comprising the copolymerizate of at least one hydrophobic monomer within an aqueous solution of a styrene/maleic anhydride resin, the styrene/maleic anhydride resin having a molecular weight ranging from 500 to 5,000 and an acid number of at most 500, and the amount by weight of the styrene/maleic anhydride resin in the copolymerizate ranging from 5% to 50%.

The invention concerns a method for obtaining an aqueous dispersion of hydrophobic polymers dispersed in the form of particles with mean diameter less than 100 nm stablized soley with a macromolecular surfactant based on low molecular weight styrene/maleic anhydride imide copolymer. The invention also concerns the use of said dispersion for treating and sizing paper.

The present invention relates to a vulcanized mixture:(i) of at least one functionalized rubber and(ii) of at least one thermoplastic in an amount which is sufficient to increase the modulus at small elongations but such that the breaking stress is not reduced by more than 10%.The thermoplastic can be chosen from polyamides and copolymers containing polyamide blocks and polyether blocks.

The invention concerns a process for preparing saccharide monomers comprising at least one polymerizable acrylate or methacrylate group whereby the saccharide used in the process is selected from mono-, di- and tri-saccharides, in particular from non-reducing mono-, di- and tri-saccharides. The process comprises reacting the saccharide in an aqueous medium with an esterifying reagent containing the polymerizable acrylate or methacrylate group in the presence of a base while maintaining the pH of the reaction medium to a value within the range of 7 to 11 during the entire reaction time. The invention furthermore concerns saccharide monomers comprising at least one polymerizable acrylate or methacrylate group with a controlled degree of substitution.

A process is presented for the preparation of a latex by the emulsion polymerization at a temperature of between 30 and 90 C. of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of at least one surfactant and of a seed of polymer particles with a diameter of between 200 and 450 nm. The seed particles represent from 5-25% by weight of the total weight of the monomer and seed. The polymerization is initiated by a mixed water-soluble/fat-soluble system. Also included are lattices obtained from this process.

Composite latex whose average particle size is between 30 and 150 nm, as these particles result from polymerization of a mixture hydrophobic monomers composed of styrene and (meth)acrylic esters to produce an emulsion in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble or water-dispersible amphiphilic copolymer having a molecular weight of between 500 and 5,000 and whose acid number of less than 500, said latex being composed of a combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic monomers incorporating carboxylic acid functions in the presence of a radical-producing initiator, wherein said aqueous water-soluble amphiphilic polymer is free of any other surfactant or protective colloid and wherein the mass percentage of amphiphilic copolymer in relation to the dry extract of the latex between 10 and 50%.

The invention relates to an aqueous polymer dispersion which can be obtained from a mixture of monomers comprising, in parts by weight: a) 100 of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer not comprising an ionic group, b) 0.5 to 15 of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying at least one carboxyl and/or carboxylic anhydride functional group, c) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying at least one second functionality selected from: phosphate, phosphonate or phosphinate, in an amount such that the ratio c/(b+c) varies from 0.05 to 0.4, d) 0 to 2 of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying at least one alkoxysilane functional group, e) 0 to 5 of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer additionally carrying at least one active carbonyl functional group or an other aldhehyde-reactive functional group, such as an ureido derivative, or morpholine, imidazoline, oxazolidine, aziridine, or an aldhehyde-reactive amine function, f) 0 to 10, preferably 2 to 8, of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying at least one functional group selected from hydroxyl and primary or secondary amine. The invention also relates to a preparation process, to a coating composition comprising the said dispersion and to a method of use in coatings for metal or plastic substrates, in particular corrosion-inhibiting coatings for metal substrates.
