Abstract: The invention relates to a microdisplay system that utilizes a small high resolution active matrix liquid crystal display with an illumination system and a magnifying optical system to provide a hand held communication display device. The system can employ an LED illumination system and cellular communication or processor circuits within a compact housing to provide communication devices such as pagers, telephones, televisions, and hand held computer devices with a compact high resolution video display.

Abstract: An active matrix color sequential liquid crystal display has an active matrix circuit, a counterelectrode panel and an interposed layer of liquid crystal. The active matrix circuit has an array of transistor circuits formed in a first plane. Each transistor circuit is connected to a pixel electrode in an array of pixel electrodes having a small area. The display is housed in a portable display device having a docking port for a memory card used to input video data for the display.

Abstract: A control apparatus for an active matrix liquid crystal display device is fabricated with the active matrix as a single integrated SOI circuit. The control apparatus and the active matrix are lifted from a silicon substrate and transferred to a glass substrate as a single piece. The control apparatus comprises a video interface, a column driver, and dual row drivers. The video interface operates the active matrix as a multiple-frequency scanning display device. The polarities of the display pixels are reversed on every frame by a polarity switch coupled to a video signal amplifier. The control apparatus further comprises sensors for generating a gray-scale feedback signal to adjust the gain of the video amplifier. User control of the display is provided by a user interface.

Abstract: An active matrix display panel is operated by a color sequential system to form color images. A color generator is disposed between a light source and the display panel for sequentially providing red, green and blue light. A color sequential drive circuit controls the color generator and the pixels of the display panel. The color generator is preferably a multi-stage multiple wavelength blocking filter incorporating fast switching surface stabilized liquid crystal cells.

Abstract: A housing is mountable on a carousel slide projector. The housing contains a movable light valve slide assembly that is coupled to a video signal source. The light valve slide assembly is movable between a position within the housing and a position outside the housing. When mounted on the slide projector, the light valve slide assembly can be moved into the projection chamber of the slide projector. The video signal source transmits a video signal to the light valve slide assembly, where the video signal is converted to a drive signal to actuate pixels on the light valve. The light valve thus generates a video image that is projected onto a viewing surface. Preferably the light valve is an active matrix liquid crystal display.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of fabricating pixel electrodes for active matrix displays including the formation of arrays of transistor circuits in thin film silicon on an insulating substrate and transfer of this active matrix circuit onto an optically transmissive substrate. An array of color filter elements can be formed prior to transfer of the active matrix circuit that are aligned between a light source for the display and the array of pixel electrodes to provide a color display.

Abstract: A color active matrix display system allows random access of pixel electrodes. The control electronics is fabricated with the active matrix circuitry using single crystal silicon technology. The control electronics includes a random access data scanner and random access spec scanners. By selectively actuating pixel electrodes in the active matrix display region, compressed video information can be directly displayed on the active matrix display panel. Color stripes are used to generate sequential color systems to produce a color image from the active matrix display panel.
