Abstract: Fibers and fibrillated articles are provided by imparting fluid energy to at least one surface of a highly oriented, voided, melt-processed polymeric film. The fibers and fibrillated articles are useful as tape backings, filters, thermal and acoustical insulation and as reinforcement fibers for polymers or cast building materials such as concrete.

Abstract: A method of making a three-dimensional film structure having controllable contact properties comprises making separable surface elements on a top portion of a film structure and stretching the film structure to separate the separable surface elements, thereby obtaining a desired surface structure which delivers a certain contact property such as a pressure sensitive adhesive property. The separable surface elements are provided using a cut film surface, a stemmed film, or a layer of particles.

Abstract: In an acrylonitrile based retarder, relatively uniform performance is obtained as the angle of incidence varies over a wide range. A toughening material may be blended with an acrylonitrile based polymer to facilitate processing of a retarder and improve mechanical properties of the retarder without compromising the optical performance. A rubber-modified acrylonitrile based retarder which provides relatively uniform wide angle can be fabricated using conventional processing techniques. Such retarders are particularly suited for a number of specific applications which use relatively wide ranges of incidence angles.
