Abstract:
Automatic dishwashing detergents containing N-alkoxy or N-aryloxy polyhydroxy fatty acid amide surfactants which provide not only improved cleaning, but also improved filming and spotting performance on tableware are described. Thus, C.sub.12 -C.sub.14 N-(3-methoxypropyl) glucamide is used in automatic dishwashing compositions which, optionally, can be formulated to be free from chlorine bleach or phosphate builders. Weak builders such as citrate and perborate or percarbonate bleach can be used in the compositions, as can various detersive enzymes.

Laundry or toilet bars comprising one or more surface active agents such as soaps or synthetic detergents are prepared using an alkoxy or aryloxy polyhydroxy fatty acid amide to improve bar smear, cracking or wearing qualities, Palm oil chain-length fatty acid amides of N-(3-methoxypropyl) glucamine and N-(2-methoxyethyl) glucamine are examples of the glucamide surfactant used in such bars.

The present invention relates to textile treating compositions which are especially useful for treating textiles in the rinse cycle of a textile laundering operation to provide improved fabric softening and conditioning benefits. The textile treatment compositions comprise a substantially water-insoluble cationic fabric softening agent in combination with a substantially saturated lipid component containing one or more phosphoglycerides. The present invention further relates to a method for softening and conditioning textiles by treating the textiles, preferably during the rinse cycle of a textile laundering operation, with a combination of the softening agent and substantially saturated lipid component.

The dishwashing composition further comprises a bridged polyhydroxy fatty acid amide for improved sudsing performance.

Low-sudsing detergent compositions comprise an N-alkyl polyhydroxy fatty acid amide surfactant, wherein the N-alkyl substituent is at least C.sub.2, preferably C.sub.3 -C.sub.8. Such compositions are useful under cleaning conditions where excessive sudsing may be problematic.

Detergent compositions containing N-(1,2 propanediol) fatty acid amide surfactants of the general type RC(0)NR.sup.1 CH.sub.2 CHOHCH.sub.2 OH, especially where R.sup.1 is methyl or hydroxyethyl, are useful surfactants in laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, shampoos, bar soaps, and hard surface cleaners. The amide surfactants provide good cleaning even in the absence of LAS surfactants.

Stock solutions of polyhydroxy fatty acid amide surfactants at high concentrations are characterized by their unfortunate tendency to thicken, or gel, on storage. Mild heating and the inclusion of carboxylates such as oxydisuccinate, citrate or tartrate-succinate maintain the viscosity of such solutions below about 2,000 centipoise, even at temperatures around 30.degree. C.
