Abstract: A method for initiating the gas scarfing process during the high velocity movement of the workpiece to be scarfed relative to the scarfing machine wherein a consumable metal electrode is melted as it is fed toward the workpiece to form a deposit of the metal at a selected position along the workpiece. The electrode is also rotated toward the workpiece at a speed approximately equal to the speed at which the relative movement between the workpiece and the scarfing machine takes place so as to control the formation of the metal deposit.
