Abstract:
A method and apparatus for contactless measuring of a dimension of movable objects wherein opposite borders of an image of a movable object are projected in one dimension upon a respective one of a pair of opto-electrical devices, each of the optoelectrical devices being comprised of an array of light sensitive elements. The opto-electrical devices are scanned successively at a predetermined repetition rate, the scanning being performed with a simultaneous start from that end of each opto-electrical device which is covered or shadowed by the image of the object. The signals from the illuminated and shadowed-out light sensitive elements of the opto-electrical devices are then detected and the dimension of the object is then determined.
Abstract:
A centrifuge for treating a fluid, particularly a fluid containing heavier corpuscles in suspension, such as blood, includes a rotor rotatable about a spin axis and a motor for operable to rotate the rotor. A flexible tube extends through the rotor and has end portions extending from the ends of the rotor coaxially with the spin axis, the flexible tube, between the end portions thereof and within the rotor, being bent radially outwardly of the spin axis to form a bend with the radially outermost bend portion forming the treatment chamber. The tube is supported for rotation about its own axis independently of rotation of the rotor, and injection means are provided to supply fluid to be treated to the treatment chamber, with discharge means being connected to the tube to discharge treated fluid from the treated chamber into receptacles in a dish. Selectively operable brakes are engageable with the tube to cause the tube, during spinning of the rotor, to be decelerated to rotate about its own axis relative to the rotor.
Abstract:
A design of finned units, intended for example for thermal regenerators, heat exchangers or burners for liquid fuel. The finned units are manufactured by simultaneous spiral winding of a strip forming fins and a spacer element forming a distance between the fins. The spacer elements are wholly or partially removed when fixing elements have been introduced in a number of holes distributed about the circumference. The cross-sectional area of each fixing element is equal to or smaller than the cross-sectional area of the corresponding holes in the fins. As a consequence thereof each fixing element prevents movement of the fins exclusively in a plane perpendicular to said fixing element.
Abstract:
A burner nozzle for cutting purposes and provided with channels conducting cutting gas, burner gas and heating gas. The cutting gas channel extends rectilinearly through the entire nozzle. One of the other channels is annularly formed around the cutting gas channel and is connected at the outlet end of the nozzle to an annular chamber. Said chamber is connected with a plurality of narrow channels being inclined or turned relative the axis of the nozzle. Said narrow channels are mainly intended for the burning gas and said annularly formed channel is intended for the heating gas. The burning and heating gases are mixed when the heating gas flows out from said annular chamber in said inclined or turned channels. The gas mixture is arranged to flow annularly out around the jet of cutting gas and form a heating flame.
Abstract:
An improvement in an optical measuring instrument intended for the determination of the distance between two measuring points projected onto a basel plane. The basic device comprises a central optical element with a semi-transparent surface and a totally reflecting surface at a right angle thereto. The device also comprises an outer optical element, such as a mirror or a pentagonal prism, arranged in each beam path between the central optical element and each measuring point, which deflects each respective beam path at a right angle. According to the invention, the central optical element is rotatable about an axis which is parallel to the semi-transparent surface as well as to the totally reflecting surface. By rotating the central optical element one beam will sweep in a plane in space which is defined by the parallel beam paths from the outer optical elements to the measuring points. The device is therefore capable of being employed to determine the location of a random point relative to that plane.
Abstract:
A centrifuge including flexible tubes in fluid communication with containers for a sample being centrifuged and having portions extending into the containers. The containers are held in a ring which is detachably secured to the centrifuge rotor. The device includes means for withdrawing those portions of the tubes which extend into each container inwardly towards the center of the centrifuge a distance sufficient to permit the ring holding the containers to be freely raised off the centrifuge rotor. In a preferred embodiment, the tubes are in liquid communication with a chamber for holding a liquid and motion of the chamber either axially or rotatably or both with respect to the rotor withdraws the conduits from the liquid containers.
Abstract:
A method for initiating the gas scarfing process during the high velocity movement of the workpiece to be scarfed relative to the scarfing machine wherein a consumable metal electrode is melted as it is fed toward the workpiece to form a deposit of the metal at a selected position along the workpiece. The electrode is also rotated toward the workpiece at a speed approximately equal to the speed at which the relative movement between the workpiece and the scarfing machine takes place so as to control the formation of the metal deposit.
Abstract:
A corrective device is provided for modulated light transmitters or receivers having light-emitting or light-responsive surfaces for which the modulation phase varies over the surface. The device eliminates any systematic error which may occur where only a portion of the surface is active by providing random reorientation of the transmitted or received light beam, the device taking the form of a multi-path translator wherein light conductors connect points on the input surface of the translator to randomly distributed points on the output surface.
