Abstract: A safety system is disclosed for failsafe servicing of areas within an order fulfillment facility. During normal operation, a number of battery-powered robots receive wireless instructions from a management control system (MCS) to transfer items to/from workstations or storage shelves in a multi-level storage structure. The order fulfillment facility may be divided into dynamically configurable service zones. When service is required in a service zone, different safety protocols may be employed based on a determination as to the priority level of service required and/or the estimated length of time service will take. One safety protocol involves physically blocking all access points to a service area with mechanical guards, so that order fulfillment operations may be proceed around the service zone while service is performed.

Abstract: The present technology relates to an automated system structure which may be quickly and efficiently assembled using a number of storage modules. Storage modules may be comprised of a pair of shelf modules, each comprising a number of defined storage locations for storing totes, cartons, trays or other containers. The shelf modules may themselves be modular units comprising a number of horizontal storage levels affixed to a pair of vertical support assemblies at each end of the shelf modules. The pair of shelf modules may be accurately spaced from each other by mounting the shelf modules to tie beams at the bottom and tie plates at the top.

Abstract: An order fulfillment system includes a storage structure and integrated turning decks enabling mobile robots to pass between sections of the storage structure or to exit or enter the storage structure. An automated dispensing portion may be affixed to a turning deck, which automated dispensing portion connects with a dispensing portal. Thus, the turning deck allows direct transport of mobile robots between the storage structure and the dispensing portal.

Abstract: An automated order fulfillment facility including one or more rows of storage locations for storing totes or other containers, mobile robots configured to move along and/or between rails to transfer the totes or other containers to and from the storage locations, and an energy absorbing mechanical guard mounted at a point along the rails to block or stop a runaway mobile robot. The energy absorbing mechanical guard may be configured to stop mobile robots traveling at a maximum rate of speed for the mobile robots, without damaging the mobile robots.
