AN ADAPTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM TO PREVENT SKIDDING OF AN AUTOMATIVE VEHICLE BY REDUCING THE BRAKE PRESSURE YET MAINTAINING NEAR MAXIMUM BRAKING TORQUE. A TRANSDUCER MEASURES THE BRAKE PRESSURE TO PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL INPUT TO CONTROL LOGIC ALREADY INCLUDING INPUTS FROM WHEEL SPEED SENSORS AND A VEHICLE ACCELERATION SENSOR OR VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR. THE MAXIMUM PRESSURE ON EACH CYCLE IS MEMORIZED AND A PERCENTAGE VALUE USED TO INSURE THAT ON THE NEXT CYCLE THE PRESSURE BUILD WILL NOT BE PERMATURELY TERMINATED. Abstract: An electrically actuated hydraulic brake booster is disclosed which is adapted for use with an automatic brake control system having a device for sensing the distance and relative velocity between vehicles and for automatically actuating the brakes of the vehicle when the automatic control system senses a relative velocity and distance which indicates that a collision is imminent. The electrically actuated brake booster includes a solenoid-operated spool valve which operates in series with the spool valve in the brake booster. The solenoid-actuated valve, when actuated, terminates communication between the booster pressure chamber and pump return, and initiates communication between the booster chamber and the pump outlet. One embodiment of the invention uses a proportional solenoid valve, which exerts a force on the spool valve in proportion to the electrical current transmitted to the solenoid. A second embodiment of the invention uses a two-position solenoid valve to control the spool valve and a second normally open solenoid valve to close a supplemental passage between the solenoid-operated spool valve and the booster pressure chamber. Actuation of the solenoid controlling the spool valve causes a fast brake pressure build rate and actuation of both solenoids causes a slow build up in brake pressure.

Abstract: A tow vehicle-trailer braking system where a transducer in the brake line of the tow vehicle and a transducer in the brake line of the trailer are evaluated by a comparator to develop an operational signal to operate the wheel brakes of the trailer. The operational signal positions a solenoid valve to regulate the communication of fluid under pressure to the wheel brakes of the trailer. The fluid under pressure is developed by a pump. The pump is driven by a cam attached to the wheel of the trailer until the predetermined pressure level for the fluid is reached. Upon reaching this predetermined pressure, the pressurizing piston in the pump becomes disengaged from the cam.

Abstract: An anti-skid control system for operating inlet and outlet valves of a pressure modulator. The control system uses the rate of change of rotational velocity of the wheels to give an acceleration or deceleration signal. After given acceleration or deceleration rates have been exceeded, the appropriate valve is variably pulsed to give brake pressure build and decay rates that are directly proportioned to wheel acceleration or deceleration. A deceleration responsive switch is used to vary the length of the pressure decay cycle to account for varying coefficients of friction. A delay prevents an initial deceleration rate from operating the valves unless the deceleration rate still exists after a time period.

Abstract: An antiskid brake system for a vehicle having road engaging wheels is disclosed wherein a fluid is injected between the frictionally engaging brake surfaces to reduce the energy absorbing capacity of the brake when the wheel is sensed to be skidding or in imminent danger of skidding. The injected fluid forms a thin film between the engaged surfaces reducing the friction therebetween. Normal braking capacity is restored to the wheel when the fluid injection is terminated.
