Abstract: Deuterium is used instead of hydrogen in a process for producing glass having low hydroxyl ion content. In a flame hydrolysis process deuterium gas, or a deuterium compound gas, is passed through a liquid containing a silicon compound such as silicon tetrachloride. The resulting vapor is burned to deposit a film of silicon dioxide on a rotating mandrel. Glass produced in this manner is particularly suitable for use as optical waveguides. The hydroxyl ion normally present in glass produced in the presence of hydrogen is replaced by the deuterium containing ion OD . Absorption peaks normally caused by the presence of the hydroxyl ions are shifted to longer wavelengths at which the absorptions are not troublesome when the waveguide is used to transmit light in the band of approximately 7,000A.

Abstract: A glass optical waveguide fiber having a V value in the range of about 1.0 to 35 is coiled about a support member to form one or more layers of fiber. A layer of light absorbing material may be disposed upon the surface of the fiber to prevent cross-talk. Where two or more layers of fiber are disposed on the support member, adjacent layers of fiber may be separated by a layer of light absorbing material if the fiber is not provided with an extramural absorbing layer.

Abstract: A method of forming an optical waveguide by first forming a coating of glass with a predetermined index of refraction on the outside peripheral wall surface of a glass cylinder having a different predetermined index of refraction. The glass cylinder and glass coating combination is then heated and drawn to reduce the cross-sectional area and form a clad optical fiber where the core is formed from the glass cylinder and the cladding is formed from the glass coating.

Abstract: OPTICAL WAVEGUIDES INCLUDE A CORE OF DOPED SIO2 AND A CLADDING OF PURE SIO2 OR DOPED SIO2. THE DOPANT, WHICH IS AN OXIDE OF A MULTIVALENT ELEMENT, BECOMES CHEMICALLY REDUCED DURING FABRICATION WHICH USUALLY INCLUDES HEATING THE WAVEGUIDE SO THAT IT CAN BE DRAWN. FOR EXAMPLE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, A COMMONLY USED DOPANT, HAS TI+4 IONS WHICH ARE REDUCED TO TI+3 IONS DURING THE FABRICATION OF THE WAVEGUIDES. THESE REDUCED IONS INCREASE THE ATTENUATION OF THE WAVEGUIDE. FOR EXAMPLE, REDUCED TITANIUM DIOXIDE IS BROWN. IT ABSORBS LIGHT IN THE BLUE REGION AND THE AMOUNT OF TI+3 IONS IN THE GLASS MUST BE QUITE LOW IN ORDER TO GET THE DESIRED WAVEGUIDE TRANSMISSION PROPERTIES. THE REDUCED MULTIVALENT ELEMENT ION ATTENUATION IS MINIMIZED BY HEAT TREATING THE WAVEGUIDE FIBER AT TEMPERATURES IN THE RANGE OF APPROXIMATELY 800 TO 1,000*C. FOR TIMES OF APPROXIMATELY SIX HOURS OR LESS. THE REDUCED MULTIVALENT ION IS OXIDIZED WITH HYDROXYL IONS DELIBERATELY RETAINED IN THE GLASS AND WHICH SERVE AS THE OXIDIZING AGENT.

Abstract: A METHOD OF FORMING AN OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE BY FIRST FORMING A COATING OF GLASS ON THE INSIDE WALL OF A GLASS TUBE, THE GLASS TUBE AND THE FIRST COATING BEING OF SUBSTANTIALLY SIMILAR MATERIAL. THEREAFTER, A SECOND COATING OF GLASS IS APPLIED TO THE INSIDE WALL OF THE GLASS TUBE OVER THE FIRST COATING, SAID SECOND COATING HAVING A PRESELECTED DIFFERENT INDEX OF REFRACTION FROM THAT OF THE FIRST COATING. THE GLASS TUBE AND COATING COMBINATION IS THEREAFTER DRAWN TO REDUCE THE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA AND TO COLLAPSE THE SECOND AND INNER COATING OF GLASS TO FORM A FIBER HAVING A SOLID CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA. THE COLLAPSED INNER COATING FORMS THE FIBER CORE AND THE FIRST COATING FORMS THE CLADDING FOR THE FIBER WHILE THE EXTERIOR GLASS TUBE PROVIDES STRUCTURAL STRENGTH FOR THE FIBER.

Abstract: A source of optical wave energy for an optical transmission system. One end of an optical fiber having a thin, elongated core of laser material is so aligned with an end of an optical waveguide that coherent light generated in the core is coupled to the optical waveguide. A first transparent cladding layer is disposed upon the surface of the core, and a second thin transparent cladding layer is disposed upon the surface of the first layer. The refractive index of the first layer is less than that of the core and greater than that of the second layer. A solid state source of incoherent light is disposed immediately adjacent to that end of the optical fiber which is opposite the optical waveguide. Light from the solid state source is coupled into the optical fiber and is propagated longitudinally therethrough. Coherent light is generated by the core of laser material as it absorbs incoherent light propagating through the optical fiber.
