Abstract: The current technology relates to substrate treatments, treated substrates, and filters. Treated substrates can have a treated surface that defines a pattern and/or gradient among untreated surface areas. A treated surface area can have a higher roll off angle for a 50 μL water droplet when the surface is immersed in toluene that the untreated surface areas. Substrates can be treated by, for example, exposing a substrate surface and/or fibers to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can be applied to surfaces via a mask, lens, waveguide, reflector, as examples. UV radiation can be applied to surfaces at varying intensities, which can create a treatment gradient.

Abstract: A shutoff vent is disclosed. A main body has a first end and a second end. The main body defines a first opening towards the first end, a second opening towards the second end, and a mating port between the first opening and the second opening. The first opening and the second opening are in communication through the mating port to define a gas passageway. A translatable plug is disposed within the main body, and the gas passageway extends past the translatable plug. The translatable plug is configured to reversibly translate towards the second end to sealably obstruct the mating port. In some examples, the translatable plug is configured to translate towards the second end when force is applied to the translatable plug from the first end.

Abstract: This disclosure describes filter media and mask filters and face mask systems including those filter media. In one aspect, the filter media includes a fibrous media including multi-component binder fibers, glass fibers, and microfibrillated cellulose fibers. In some aspects, the fibrous media further includes PET fibers. In another aspect, the filter media includes an electrostatically charged filter media, a fine fiber layer, and a scrim. In yet another aspect, the filter media includes two fine fiber layers, and two scrims. In additional aspects, the filter media includes bicomponent fibers, polyethylene terephthalate fibers, and microfibrillated cellulose fibers. In a further aspect, the filter media includes a support layer, a continuous fine fiber layer, and an efficiency layer. Combinations and composites of the filter media are also contemplated.

Abstract: A hydrocarbon-in-water purification system includes a high capacity hydrocarbon absorber stage having a high capacity hydrocarbon absorber material and an inlet configured to receive a hydrocarbon-in-water dispersion from a fuel system. A polishing hydrocarbon absorber stage is in liquid communication and downstream of the high capacity hydrocarbon absorber stage including polishing activated carbon. The high capacity hydrocarbon absorber material has a greater saturation capacity than the polishing activated carbon and the polishing activated carbon has a greater polishing capacity than the high capacity hydrocarbon absorber material. A method for controlling and managing the evacuation of water from the hydrocarbon-in-water purification system includes tracking the purification state of water volumes and the bed loading states of purification beds defined in the water filter.
