    Abstract: A polarimeter and polarimetry method are disclosed of the type in which light polarization rotating properties of a sample are measured by interposing the sample in the path of a light beam having base plane polarization in a plane of known orientation; along the beam path, compensating or nulling the rotation introduced by the sample, and determining the optical rotational properties of the sample based on the amount of compensation introduced to the light beam. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, the light beam is subjected to plural compensations along its path the compensations being of at least two different types. Preferably, one of the types of compensation is mechanical, introduced through a device in which polarization rotation is adjusted mechanically, and the second type of compensation is provided through a device in which polarization rotation is controlled electrically. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, a first polarization rotation compensation is performed with the sample in the beam path, the sample is removed, and compensation is restored by performing a second polarization rotation compensation, the second compensation being used to determine the polarization rotation introduced by the sample.

    Abstract: Two-part resin-reinforced cement compositions, kits, and related methods are used for bonding a dental prosthetic appliance to a tooth. A first part includes an amine activator component and a zinc oxide reactive filler, while a second part includes a polymerization initiator (e.g., benzoyl peroxide) and a polymerizable component having a structure including at least one acrylate or methacrylate group at one end and a carboxylic acid group at another end. A temporary cement composition advantageously exhibits reduced compressive and/or bonding strength relative to permanent cement compositions, which provides sufficient strength to facilitate normal use of the teeth while the provisional appliance is in use, while also facilitating easy removal of the provisional appliance for replacement with a permanent appliance at a later time.

    Abstract: Water-indicating endodontic monitoring devices include an endodontic cone formed of a water absorptive material, and a chemical indicator comprising at least one cobalt salt applied to the water absorptive material. Alternatively, the water-indicating endodontic points may include a pH-changing material and a pH-sensitive indicator. The devices are manufactured by applying an aqueous solution that includes a moisture sensitive color-changing chemical indicator to the endodontic cone. The solution may be applied by spraying, dipping, or otherwise coating or impregnating the material. Once applied, the endodontic cones are dried so as to be substantially free of moisture. In use, the endodontic cone may be inserted into the root canal of a patient, and when withdrawn, a change in the color of the chemical indicator indicates the presence of moisture within the root canal. The endodontic cone may optionally change to a different color in order to indicate the presence of aqueous sodium hypochlorite within the root canal.
