Abstract:
There is disclosed an apparatus for illuminating a sensing region having an object therein, comprising a reflector that is elongated in a first plane, the reflector having a width dimension that is less than a width dimension of a sensing region to be illuminated, and further having a first curved profile in the first plane about a center of curvature. In a preferred embodiment the reflector is disposed between the center of curvature and the sensing region. In a second plane which is orthogonal to the first plane and includes the center of curvature, a reflecting surface of the reflector has a second curved profile. A plurality of substantially Lambertian light sources each face the reflector for directing light thereto generally in a direction of the center of curvature for reflection toward the sensing region. The second profile preferably comprises a portion of an ellipse and a light source is disposed substantially at a primary focus thereof. The second profile preferably has a gap for transmitting retroreflected light generated within the sensing region therethrough. An upper portion of the second profile comprises a portion of a first surface of revolution selected from the group of ellipse and parabola, and the lower portion of the second profile can comprise a portion of a second surface of revolution selected from the group of ellipse and parabola, a light source being disposed at a focus of each of the first surface of revolution and the second surface of revolution. The assembly is combined in a scanner for reading optical patterns.
Abstract:
A personal sound delivery apparatus which can be worn by a person has speakers held close to the ears and does not include any insert into the auditory canal or any ear muff that could muffle or suppress other ambient sounds. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a wireless speaker is anchored by an arcuate hanger shaped and dimensioned to rest behind the ear. The speaker is positioned within a range from 0 to 20 centimeters (0 to 8 inches) from the auditory canal and may be surrounded by baffles that focus the incoming sound toward the entrance of the auditory canal. In other embodiments, a pair of speakers are embedded into the collar of a garment, a scapulary that rests upon the shoulders, a clamp that is bridging the nape of the neck, in pendants suspended from the neck, or hidden in a pair of earrings.
Abstract:
A ring support system for use in a variable pipe diffuser. The ring support mechanism includes at least three axle shafts and at least three roller bearings rotatably mounted to the axle shafts, an inner ring having a groove disposed in the outside diameter, and an outer ring having a corresponding groove disposed in the inside diameter. The at least three axle shafts are circumferentially mounted in the outer ring such that the rollers are positioned partially within the groove of the outer cylinder such that the roller bearings define a diameter nearly equal to the outside diameter of the inner ring. The inner ring is positioned within the at least three roller bearings such that the at least three roller bearings are in axial sliding contact with the groove of the inner ring and in rolling contact with the groove of the inner ring. The ring support system provides rotational and axial support of the inner ring.
Abstract:
Implementations described and claimed herein provide systems, apparatuses, and methods for providing cardiovascular exercise by simulating an exercise experience, such as a jump rope experience. In one implementation, a pair of exercise simulators is provided. Each of the exercise simulators includes a spin assembly rotationally mounted to a handle along an axis line. The spin assembly is configured to rotate about the axis line. At least one weight is housed in the spin assembly, and a light source is configured to rotate about the axis line with the spin assembly. The light source is configured to emit light to provide a visual representation of the motion of the spin assembly.

Abstract:
A drive positioning mechanism for use in a variable pipe diffuser for a centrifugal compressor. A rotational drives means is fixedly attached to the housing of a centrifugal compressor with a pinion gear mounted thereto. A rack gear is mounted to the inner ring and adapted to engage in meshing arrangement with the pinion gear. The rotational drive means is operable to position the inner ring between a fully open position and a partially closed position. A travel limiter is provided to positively limited the travel of the inner ring at the filly open and the partially closed positions.
Abstract:
A system for lubricating a crankshaft lip seal having wear surfaces with a lubricant used with the crankshaft. The system includes a compressor housing portion, wherein the lip seal secured in the compressor housing portion for engagement with the crankshaft and a structure in the compressor housing portion for adequately providing lubricant to the lip seal surfaces. In a preferred embodiment the structure includes a bore having a reservoir for maintaining the lubricant in contact with the lip seal and a manner for controlling the amount of the lubricant in the reservoir.
Abstract:
A compressor oil diversion and collection system used in a compressor having a housing, a crankshaft having shaft seals, refrigerant and a compression device for compressing the refrigerant. The system includes a shaft sealing mechanism that uses a lubricant for preventing compressor refrigerant from leaking out of the compressor housing and has a space where the lubricant collects. A diversion mechanism is deployed for directing excess amounts of said lubricant from the space to a receiver for receiving the excess amounts of said lubricant from the diversion mechanism. The receiver may be in the form of an internal cavity which includes a removable cartridge located in the cavity for collecting the excess amounts of said lubricant, an external collection reservoir or an external drainage tube.
Abstract:
A transportable container for refueling a refuelable battery includes a case, an electrolyte reservoir within the case, a first valve connected to the electrolyte reservoir, a fuel compartment within the case, a second valve connected to the fuel compartment, and a conduit connected to the electrolyte reservoir and the fuel compartment. When the transportable container is attached to a refuelable battery, a closed flow circuit for the circulation of electrolyte is defined. Fuel particles and electrolyte are fed from the transportable container into the refuelable battery. When the refuelable battery is discharged, the transportable container, containing spent electrolyte and reaction products, is detached from the refuelable battery.
