Abstract:
THERE IS DISCLOSED A PROCESS FOR COPOLYMERIZING ETHYLENE AND/OR HIGHER ALPHA-OLEFINS TO ELASTOMERIC SATURATED COPOLYMERS, OR FOR COPOLYMERIZING AT LEAST ONE OF ETHYLENE AND HIGHER ALPHA-OLEFINS WITH HYDROCARBONS CONTAINING MORE THAN ONE DOUBLE BOND TO ELASTOMERIC UNSATURATED, SULFUR-VULCANIZABLE COPOLYMERS IN VERY HIGH YIELDS. THE CATALYST USED IS OBTAINED BY MIXING (A) A HYDRICE OR ORGANOMETALLIC COMPOUND OF A METAL BELONGING TO GROUPS I TO III OF THE MENDELYEEV PERIODIC TABLE WITH (B) THE PRODUCT OBTAINED BY CONTACTING A TITANIUM COMPOUND WITH A SUPPORT CONSISTING OF AN ANHYDROUS HALIDE OF MAGNESIUM, MANGANESE OR CALCIUM IN AN ACTIVE CONDITION.
Abstract:
There are disclosed new, high-impact resistant compositions based on polyvinylchloride and comprising graft copolymers of vinyl monomers and certain rubbery polyalkenamers having a narrow molecular weight distribution. Unexpectedly, the graft copolymers function to improve the mechanical properties, more particularly the impact resistance, of the compositions, as compared to polyvinylchloride, per se. That polyvinylchloride tends to be brittle and to have relatively low impact resistance is well known. In the past, it has been attempted to overcome the brittleness of polyvinylchloride, and its relatively low impact resistance by incorporating various plasticizers with it. A problem has been the tendency of the plasticizers to ''''bleed,'''' a result of a basic incompatibility of the polyvinylchloride and the plasticizers available.

A PROCESS FOR PREPARING IMPACT-RESISTANT POLYMERIC COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING GRAFT POLYMERIZING AT LEAST ONE ETHYLENICALLY UNSATURATED MONOMER SELECTED FROM THE GOUP CONSISTING OF STYRENES, ACRYLONITRILE, METHACRYLONITRILE, STYRENE/ACRYLONITRILE MIXTURES, ALKYL ACRYLATES, ALKYL METHACRYALTES, VINYL CHLORIDE AND VINYL ACETATE ONTO AN ELASTOMER SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF SATURATED COPOLYMERS OF ETHYLENE AND AN A-OLEFIN AND LOW UNSATURATION COPOLYMERS OF ETHYLENE, AND A-OLEFIN AND A DIENE OR POLYENE HYDROCARBON, WHEREIN SAID ELASTOMER IS DISSOLVED IN A SOLVENT SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF N-BUTANE, PROPANE AND MIXTURES THEREOF.
