Abstract: Disclosed are various embodiments for a self-monitoring conducting device that responds to strain and temperature changes. In one example, a self-monitoring conducting device comprises a superconducting cable having a core and one or more layers of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) tape architecture surrounding the core. The self-monitoring conducting device further includes optical fibers integrated within the superconducting cable. The optical fibers can monitor a state of the superconducting cable along a length of the superconducting cable.

Abstract: A hypersonic aircraft having a homopolar motor with high temperature superconducting (HTS) non-insulated (NI) coil magnets is described. In some implementations, the HTS NI coil magnets can have a graded resistance design. In some implementations, the HTS NI coil magnets can include a series of stacked coils, each of the series of coils comprising multiple turns having turn-to-turn resistance, where the turn-to-turn resistance of the series of coils is graded coil-to-coil across the magnet. In some implementations, the HTS NI coil magnets can include an NI coil comprising multiple turns and two or more thermal barriers each disposed between two adjacent turns of the coil, where an electrically conductive portion of one of the thermal barriers does not overlap with an electrically conductive portion of a different adjacent one of the thermal barriers. Some implementations can include a disk-type homopolar motor/generator including one or more HTS NI coil magnets.

Abstract: A BÏ2212 article may be formed by mixing metallic precursor powders including bismuth, strontium, calcium and copper in an oxygen-free atmosphere, mechanically alloying the metallic precursor powders in an oxygen-free atmosphere, and heating the metallic precursor alloy according to a temperature profile. The profile may include a ramp-up stage during which the alloy is heated to a peak temperature in an oxygen-free atmosphere, a dwell stage during which the alloy is held at the peak temperature for a dwell time, and a ramp-down stage during which the alloy is cooled from the peak temperature. During at least a portion of the dwell stage, the oxygen-free atmosphere is switched to an oxygen-inclusive atmosphere, wherein the alloy is oxidized to form a superconducting oxide, which may be sintered during or after oxidation. The alloy may be formed into a shape, such as a wire, prior to oxidizing.

Abstract: Ferrite films, antennas including ferrite films, and methods of making thereof are provided. The methods can include tape casting of a slurry to produce a green film, wherein the slurry includes a ferrite powder, a dispersant, and a binder in a suitable solvent; and densifying the green film to produce the ferrite film having a thickness of 50 μm to 5 mm. The methods can be used to make large area films, for example the films can have a lateral area of about 1000 cm2 to 3000 cm2. VHF/UHF antennas are including the ferrite films are also provided.
