Abstract: A field termination plates is provided for charged particle analysis apparatus wherein the plate includes an electrical insulator substrate which has a surface thereof a plurality of narrow width conductive strips arranged to correspond to equipotential lines. Over a portion of a surface a band of high resistance material is deposited in contact with and transverse to said conductive strips. Over the entire surface including the conductive strips and the band of high resistance material is deposited a very high resistance electrically conductive material.

Abstract: Field termination plates for cylindrical electron analyzers are provided wherein the plates are constructed of an insulative material coated on the interior surface with a high resistance, electrically conducting coating. Spaced concentric rings of relatively high conductivity material in electrical contact with said coating are provided; the rings providing equi-potential regions on the plates, thereby minimizing field fringing near the ends of the cylindrical tube electron analyzer.

Abstract: A sample fracturing apparatus especially adapted for use in a high vacuum enclosure for the preparation of samples in performing surface chemistry analysis on fresh surfaces of the same is disclosed. The same fracturing apparatus is a mechanical linkage system operating through the walls of an enclosure and sealed therein to pivot a breaker member with respect to a sample being held in a portion of the breaker member to effectively snap the sample and provide a clean surface upon which analysis can be made. Suitable cooling of the samples is effected by transmitting the flow of a cooling medium through the sample holder via tube lines sealed within the fracturing frame.
