Abstract: The present invention relates to a catalytic bed for the production of phthalic anhydride by oxidation of o-xylene and/or naphthalene. The catalytic bed comprises at least four layers of vanadium and titanium mixed oxide (VTiO) catalyst, arranged in series with respect to the flow of a gaseous feed mixture comprising o-xylene and/or naphthalene and an oxygen-containing gas, where the chemical composition and the height of the four layers of catalyst are optimized to improve the catalytic performance and their lifetime. The present invention also relates to a process for the production of phthalic anhydride by oxidation of o-xylene and/or naphthalene, which uses the above catalytic bed.
