Abstract: A solid phase microextraction device is disclosed, including a substrate having at least one planar surface, a sorbent layer disposed on at least a portion of the at least one planar surface, a tapering tip extending from the substrate, a receptacle mount configured for removable attachment to an emplacement of a receiving device, and a clocking feature configured for fixing a radial orientation of the at least one planar surface with respect to the receiving device. A solid phase microextraction device repository is disclosed including a wall surrounding a chamber, a plurality of orifices disposed in the wall configured to receive and retain the device, and a plurality of clocking feature interfaces disposed in the wall. A solid phase microextraction device manipulator is disclosed, including a manipulator shaft, an emplacement configured to removably engage a receptacle mount, an electrically conductive contact disposed at the emplacement, an ejector, and a clocking feature interface.

Abstract: A Taylor cone emitter device is disclosed, including a substrate, a sorbent layer on at least a portion of the substrate, a Taylor cone emitter portion extending from the substrate, and a reservoir surface configured to retain a liquid and feed the liquid to the Taylor cone emitter portion while a Taylor cone is emitted from the Taylor cone emitter portion. The Taylor cone emitter portion is free of sharp features having an edge or point with a radius of curvature of less than 250 μm and includes a broadly curved surface having a radius of curvature of at least 300 μm from which the Taylor cone emanates. A Taylor cone analysis system is disclosed, including an analytical instrument having a sample inlet, the Taylor cone emitter device, and at least one electric field lens configured to tune Taylor cone generation from the Taylor cone emitter portion.

Abstract: A solid phase microextraction device is disclosed, including a substrate having a planar surface and a sorbent layer disposed on the planar surface. The planar surface is defined by a base edge, a spray edge disposed distal across the substrate from the base edge, the spray edge including a tapering tip extending away from the base edge, a first lateral edge extending from the base edge to the tapering tip, and a second lateral edge extending from the base edge to the tapering tip, the second lateral edge being disposed distal across the substrate from the first lateral edge. The sorbent layer extends a sampling length from the spray edge toward the base edge and includes sorbent particles. A method for forming the solid phase microextraction device is disclosed, including applying the sorbent layer on the planar surface utilizing at least one of screen printing, stencil printing, or additive manufacturing.

Abstract: A Taylor cone emitter device repository is disclosed including a repository plate, a repository wall extending therefrom, and an array of orifices and an array of clocking feature interfaces disposed therein. The array of orifices receives and retains an array of Taylor cone emitter devices. The array of clocking feature interfaces guide clocking features of the array of Taylor cone emitter devices into predetermined radial orientations. The repository wall peripherally surrounds a substrate chamber configured to receive a microtiter array tray with the array of solid phase microextraction devices each disposed within a separate well of the microtiter array tray. A Taylor cone emitter device repository system is disclosed including the microtiter array tray, the array of Taylor cone emitter devices, and the Taylor cone emitter device repository system. A method for analyzing a population of samples with the Taylor cone emitter device repository system is disclosed.
