Abstract: A plurality of self-restoring equally spaced apart print hammers selectively are driven lineally toward a printing position by continuously rotating impellers having equiangularly spaced radial impelling elements. Each impeller is effective through the agency of a rockable interponent, which is selectively elevated into the path of associated impelling elements upon latching of the armature of an electromagnet, for transmitting impeller force to a corresponding print hammer. An elastomeric bumper, disposed in the path of the print hammers, dampens printing force on dies, which are conveyed past said hammers for printing, in equally spaced relationship different from the spacing of said hammers. Each die, when at a printing station, is aligned with a print hammer but spaced therefrom a distance inversely proportional to its printing area for producing copy of uniform intensity.

Abstract: A friction clutch, in which a constantly rotating driving drum is coupled to a driven clutch disc by a plurality of friction shoes is equipped with an arcuate spring band which is coupled to the friction shoes by a pry bar. Upon actuation of the clutch, the drum is initially engaged by the spring band whereupon movement of the band pivots the pry bar to engage the friction shoes with the drum. Since the band spring is coupled to the friction shoes, the friction shoes move into engagement with the drum at a rate and force which is directly related to the speed of the drum. By relating the force with which the friction shoes engage the drum to the speed of the drum, the shoes are prevented from initially rebounding from the drum thereby substantially reducing undesirable slippage and vibrations in the clutch.

Abstract: A plurality of self-restoring horizontally spaced apart print hammers selectively are driven lineally toward printing positions by continuously rotating impellers having equiangularly spaced radial impelling elements. Each impeller is effective through the agency of an interponent, which is selectively elevated into and then removed from the path of associated impelling elements of an impeller. Interponent elevation results from latching of the armature of an electromagnet. Transmission of impeller force to a print hammer results from striking of an elevated interponent by its impeller. The electromagnets are disposed in a pair of spaced apart banks aligned on opposite sides of the interponents, their armatures extending inwardly from said electromagnets and providing a plurality of aligned stands to which the lower ends of the interponents are returned by the springs, whereby armature control of the interponents is regained following armature unlatching.
