Abstract: An impact mechanism prints directly on the outer coil of a web of paper using the web itself as a backing thereby obviating the use of a separate platen. In order to hold the outer coil in a printing plane, a pair of springs continuously urge the web against a pair of stops which are adjacent to the impact mechanism. The impact mechanism includes a plurality of tines which are positioned to strike character dies against the web upon being struck by pins. The pins are distributed in a single turn helix about a cylinder which is rotatably mounted on a pivoted bracket. The cylinder rotates to index the pins across the tines and reciprocates to strike the pins against the tines. In order to sever the web into sheets after information has been recorded thereon, a pair of rollers are positioned to grip the paper being advanced from the web so that the paper may be manually brought into contact with and severed by a fixed blade.

Abstract: An endless ink ribbon is mounted in a cartridge for linear movement with respect to a print head also mounted within the cartridge and typically comprising a small belt printer used in a mobile teleprinter system. The cartridge is detachably mounted on a printer carriage, and an inking roller rotatably mounted in the cartridge is coupled to carriage movement when the carriage moves from a line-start position to a carriage-return position, for driving the ribbon. A clutch uncouples the inking roller during carriage-return to the line start position. The cartridge includes a cover disposed above the ribbon, a base disposed below the ribbon and having an aperture through which the roller is driven, and a plurality of ties for releaseably securing the cover to the base.

Abstract: A protective one-piece cover, particularly adapted for use with housings for printer apparatus and the like, is preferably molded out of a plastic material, and incorporates a non-glaring transparent viewing window, specified and optional ''''frosted'''', translucent surface areas for both diffusing ambient light and concealing portions of the apparatus therebelow, and a feed-out passageway that not only facilitates the initial manual insertion of paper in roll stock form, for example, upwardly through the cover, but provides a cutting edge for tearing off end sections of the fed-out paper. The passageway is further constructed to reliably retain even short, free end edge portions of the paper therewithin, and to prevent accidental re-entry of the free end of the paper into any closely spaced feed-in slot. The protective cover is also adapted to incorporate either an adjustable or fixed print column (or any other) indicator scale as a functional part thereof.

Abstract: An ink jet printing device wherein conductive ink, under pressure is emitted from a nozzle and breaks into droplets in the vicinity of a charging electrode such that the charge on each droplet is determined by the voltage on the charging electrode at the instant that the droplet separates from the solid stream of ink issuing from the nozzle. A mask or drain catcher is provided for blocking and catching uncharged droplets of ink, and an electrostatic field is provided for deflecting charged droplets out of a path impinging on the drain catcher and into a path impinging on a record medium for printing thereon. A vibratory transducer is connected to the nozzle structure and imparts undulations at a fixed, droplet-forming frequency to the ink issuing from the nozzle so as to induce the stream of ink to break into droplets of uniform size and spacing, at the applied droplet-forming frequency. A data signal source is connected to the charging electrode, and the phasing between the data signal and the droplet-forming signal is randomly varied to obviate distortions due to frequent, regular, or periodic formation or separation of droplets during transitions of the voltage of the charging signals.

Abstract: A rotationally adjustable support mechanism, which is particularly adapted for mounting on a motor housing, allows a first supported part (e.g., a sensor) to be accurately adjusted angularly relative to a second part (e.g., a shaft mounted code wheel). A specially constructed and uniquely mounted semicircular bushing allows the mechanism (together with the first part supported thereon) to be readily mounted on or removed from the motor housing without requiring the removal of the shaft mounted second part and/or any other associated apparatus.

Abstract: A readout means provides encoded information representing each character to be written on a cathode-ray tube screen as well as five enhancement levels. The output of the readout means is decoded into a video format and fed through a selectively actuated inverter for control of the cathode-ray beam. In response to signals at one of two of the memory enhancement output levels, the intensity of the displayed character is uniformly reduced or caused to pulsate. In response to an underline signal at one of the enhancement levels coinciding with a selected scan line, the inverter is actuated writing a row of dots under a desired character. A cursor signal at one of the enhancement levels actuates the inverter producing a cursor indication upon the screen and a tabulate enhancement signal creates a tabulate mark upon the screen.

Abstract: A plurality of self-restoring equally spaced apart print hammers selectively are driven lineally toward a printing position by continuously rotating impellers having equiangularly spaced radial impelling elements. Each impeller is effective through the agency of a rockable interponent, which is selectively elevated into the path of associated impelling elements upon latching of the armature of an electromagnet, for transmitting impeller force to a corresponding print hammer. An interponent when struck by its impeller is rocked for liberation from armature control, its descent and removal from the path of associated impelling elements being effected by a spring.

Abstract: A plurality of self-restoring horizontally spaced apart print hammers selectively are driven lineally toward printing positions by continuously rotating impellers having equiangularly spaced radial impelling elements. Each impeller is effective through the agency of an interponent, which is selectively elevated into and then removed from the path of associated impelling elements of an impeller. Interponent elevation results from latching of the armature of an electromagnet. Transmission of impeller force to a print hammer results from striking of an elevated interponent by its impeller. The electromagnets are disposed in a pair of spaced apart banks aligned on opposite sides of the interponents, their armatures extending inwardly from said electromagnets and providing a plurality of aligned stands to which the lower ends of the interponents are returned by the springs, whereby armature control of the interponents is regained following armature unlatching.
