Abstract: The present disclosure relates to limitation of noise on light detectors using an aperture. One example implementation includes a system. The system includes a lens disposed relative to a scene. The lens focuses light from the scene. The system also includes an aperture defined within an opaque material. The system also includes a waveguide having a first side that receives light focused by the lens and transmitted through the aperture. The waveguide guides the received light toward a second side of the waveguide opposite to the first side. The waveguide has a third side extending between the first side and the second side. The system also includes an array of light detectors that intercepts and detects light propagating out of the third side of the waveguide.

The system includes a lens that focuses light from a scene toward a focal plane. The system also includes an aperture defined within an opaque material. The system also includes a plurality of waveguides. A given waveguide of the plurality has an input end that receives a portion of light transmitted through the aperture, and guides the received portion toward an output end of the given waveguide. A cross-sectional area of the guided portion at the output end is greater than a cross-sectional area of the received portion at the input end. The system also includes an array of light detectors that detects the guided light transmitted through the output end.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for determining a range and relative speed of objects in an environment. An example method includes causing a laser light source to emit a plurality of light pulses, both incoherent and coherent. The light pulses interact with an environment to provide reflected light pulses. The method includes providing a local oscillator signal based on a coherent light pulse. The method also includes receiving, at a detector, the reflected light pulses, and the local oscillator signal. The method additionally includes determining, based on at least one of the reflected light pulses, a presence of an object in the environment. The method yet further includes determining, based on another reflected light pulse and the local oscillator signal, a relative speed of the object with respect to the detector.

Abstract: A light detection and ranging (LIDAR) device includes a transmitter, a receiver, and a minor. The transmitter emits collimated transmit light toward the minor for reflection into an environment. The receiver includes a receive lens, an aperture, a holder, and a light sensor. The receive lens is configured to receive, via the minor, reflections of the collimated transmit light from the environment and focus the received light at a point within the aperture. The holder is configured to position the light sensor to receive light that diverges from the aperture. The holder and aperture can be moved together relative to the receive lens as an assembly. To align the receiver with the transmitter, a light source emits light through the aperture toward the receive lens, and the assembly is adjusted so that the light emitted by the transmitter and receiver overlap m an image obtained by a camera.
