Abstract: Calcium silicate hydrate nanoparticles are combined with ammonia control materials (e.g. alum, aluminum chloride, ferric chloride, ferric sulfate, and/or sodium bisulfate) to create a phosphorus-binding composition. In the preferred embodiment, the composition is applied to poultry litter, poultry bedding or other non-aqueous substrates that are at least partially comprised of animal manure. The composition binds with phosphorus to at least reduce the amount of phosphorus in runoff water or in leachate from fields fertilized with treated manure. The combining of the calcium silicate hydrate nanoparticles with the ammonia control products has a surprising and unexpected result. The calcium silicate hydrate-ammonia control material mix reduces soluble phosphorus more than either component of the mix alone.

Abstract: Methods of preparing a mercury sorbent material are provided. The methods comprise making a copper/clay mixture by admixing a dry clay and a dry copper source; making a sulfur/clay mixture by admixing a dry clay and a dry sulfur source; admixing the copper/clay mixture and the sulfur/clay mixture, to form a mercury sorbent pre-mixture; and shearing the mercury sorbent pre-mixture to form the mercury sorbent material. Various substrates may be used with or instead of the clay, and various additives may be added to the copper, sulfur, clay, or mixture thereof.

Abstract: A particle comprises an inner part and an outer coating, wherein the inner part comprises MgO and the outer coating comprises hydrophobic nanoparticles, wherein the nanoparticles have an average size of from 1-50 nm and/or the nanoparticles are fused together and form aggregates of 100-1,000 nm of a size less than 1 μm, wherein the particle has an average size of from 1 to 1000 μm. A device adapted to perform an absorption process comprises at least one such particle. An absorption process comprises contacting such a particle with a liquid or gas.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for producing a manufactured product, a method for making a liquid absorbent, and processes for disposal of flammable liquids with a flue gas desulfurization by-product. The compositions for the manufactured products combine a binder and the by-product. The composition contains a greater percentage by weight of the by-product than the binder. The methods for producing manufactured products include dewatering the gypsum-depleted waste stream to reduce a water content, and forming the manufactured product. The method for making a liquid absorbent includes dewatering, granulating, drying, heating, and packaging a granulated gypsum-depleted composition as the liquid absorbent. The processes for disposal of flammable liquids include distributing a by-product into contact with flammable liquid, absorbing the liquid, transporting, and igniting the flammable liquid. The artificial soils are a combination of by-product and animal waste, human waste, or another bio-solid.

Abstract: A filter is includes a housing and at least first and second adsorbent materials within the housing. The second adsorbent material has different characteristic from the first adsorbent material and is in series with the first adsorbent material. When assembled, a labyrinth arrangement is located between a first port in the housing and the first adsorbent material such that gas travels between the first port and the first adsorbent material by passing through the labyrinth arrangement. A filtration system and methods for humidity control of a liquid tank head space uses a filter, including first and second adsorbent and a diffusion channel or labyrinth arrangement.

Abstract: The application provides an oxide layer material capable of adsorbing and degrading methane gas, which is obtained by a method comprising the steps of: 1) subjecting a cracked household refuse to aerobic biological pretreatment; 2) subjecting the material which has been subjected to the aerobic biological pretreatment to biological stabilizing treatment; and 3) adding copper chloride, potassium sulfate, magnesium oxide, and a composite bacterial agent for oxidizing methane gas to the material which has been subjected to the biological stabilizing treatment to obtain the oxide layer material capable of adsorbing and degrading methane gas. This disclosure further discloses a method for preparing the oxide layer material capable of adsorbing and degrading methane gas described above.
