A gasoline fuel supply system includes a feed pump part, an inline pump part, and a high-pressure pump part. The feed pump part includes a non-positive displacement electric pump, and pumps a gasoline fuel from a fuel tank and discharges at a feed pressure. The inline pump part includes a non-positive displacement mechanical pump, and pressurizes the gasoline fuel discharged from the feed pump part and discharges at a middle pressure. The high-pressure pump part includes a positive displacement mechanical pump, and pressurizes the gasoline fuel discharged from the inline pump part and discharges at a supply pressure to a fuel injection valve.

A fuel pumping system that includes a pump drive is provided. A first pumping element is operatively connected to the pump drive and is operable to generate a first flow of pressurized fuel. A second pumping element is operatively connected to the pump drive and is operable to generate a second flow of pressurized fuel. A first solenoid is operatively connected to the first pumping element and is operable to vary at least one of a fuel pressure and a fuel flow rate of the first flow of pressurized fuel. A second solenoid is operatively connected to the second pumping element and is operable to vary at least one of a fuel pressure and a fuel flow rate of the second flow of pressurized fuel.

An oil activated fuel injector which provides a pilot quantity of fuel prior to the main fuel injection event. The oil activated fuel injector includes a throttle which provides fluid communication between the high pressure chamber and a fuel bore which leads to the nozzle of the oil activated fuel injector. The pilot quantity of fuel flows through the throttle and into the fuel bore during a pre stroke of the plunger. The oil activated fuel injector reduces engine emissions and noise, and eliminates the need for additional working fluid to be provided therein in order to provide a pilot quantity of fuel.

A unit injector assembly is provided that helps to ensure maximum injection flow while minimizing the harmful affects of pressure waves within the unit injector assembly. The unit injector assembly has a first fuel passageway extending from the plunger piston pumping chamber to the tip check stem injection chamber and valve seat. The unit injector assembly has a second fuel passageway extending from the tip check stem injection chamber to a fuel control valve assembly. A flow restricting fuel passageway connects one of the pumping chamber and the first fuel passageway with the second fuel passageway and acts to minimize cavitation at the valve seat and effectively eliminates pressure waves within the unit injector assembly.

A fuel injection device operating on the solid-state energy storage principle and configured as a reciprocating plunger pump having a delivery plunger element, the delivery plunger element being moved from its starting position in the direction of a pressure chamber, the delivery plunger element storing kinetic energy during a near zero-resistance acceleration phase, this kinetic energy being abruptly transmitted by a impulse movement to the fuel present in the pressure chamber so that a pressure impulse is generated for ejaculating fuel through an injector means, a second pressure chamber being arranged on the side of the delivery plunger element opposite the first pressure chamber such that kinetic energy absorbed on return movement of the delivery plunger element to its starting position is transmitted to fuel present in the second pressure chamber.

The invention relates to a valve for controlling fluids, having an inflow line (7) and a leak fuel line (8), which each communicate with a pressure chamber (6). A piston element (3, 4) is also provided, which is adjustable by a control element (2) and opens and closes a first passage (10) between the inflow line (7) and the pressure chamber (6). The piston element (3, 4) has a slide element (3c), which is disposed directly at the seat of the piston element. The stroke length (h2) of the bc (3c) for opening the first passage is greater than or equal to the stroke length (h1) for closing a second passage (5) between the pressure chamber (6) and the leak fuel line (8).

A pumping system for a fuel injection system includes a body defining a high pressure pumping chamber, a plunger, a high pressure outlet, a high pressure fluid line connecting the pumping chamber to the outlet, a control valve along the fluid line, and a valve and restriction arrangement along the fluid line. The valve and restriction arrangement includes a restriction and a valve body. The valve body is movable between an open position in which fuel flow from the pumping chamber is generally unrestricted by the restriction and a closed position in which fuel flow from the pumping chamber is significantly restricted by the restriction to store energy in the pumping chamber. Advantageously, the high pressure restriction concept may be utilized in a pumping system for various types of rate shaping, including boot injection and square injection, in addition to pilot operation and post injection operations, and others.
