Abstract:
Exemplary metamaterial photocathodes enable detection of light from visible through long wave infrared wavelengths. Metamaterial stacks, comprising gold, silicon, and cesium-oxide, coupled to a semiconductor allow hot electrons to efficiently enter a vacuum. The hot electrons are multiplied in a multichannel plate and directly through another vacuum towards a phosphorus screen.
Abstract:
An arrangement for detecting energy particle impingement includes a support frame and a multi-tube detector pack. Each pack includes multiple detector tubes. Each tube contains at least one sensitive material. Each tube is elongate along a respective axis. The tubes extend parallel with the respective axes being co-planar. Each pack includes mounting tabs located at each axial end. The tabs provide support for the tubes within the pack. At least one of the tabs has at least one securing portion and at least one adjusting portion. Each pack includes at least one operable securing member extending from the respective securing portion to the frame. Operation of the securing member secures the pack to the support frame. Each pack includes at least one operable adjusting member extending from the respective adjusting portion to the frame. Operation of the adjusting member changes an orientation of the pack.

Abstract:
Streak camera whereof the pulse converter for converting a photon pulse for detecting into an electron stream comprises a gaseous medium. A streak camera for a photon pulse in the far-infrared region is provided with a laser source to bring particles in the medium into a Rydberg state, in a streak camera for an X-ray pulse the medium contains particles for bringing into an Auger state, and additional deflection plates are provided for separating a primary electron stream from a secondary electron stream.
Abstract:
A gas scintillation proportional counter, with a photosensitive layer, is coupled, through a UV transparent window, to a multi-anode proportional chamber filled with a gas mixture (for instance an argon triethylamine-methane mixture) having a large quantum efficiency for the UV photons. When detecting incident photons, there is obtained the good efficency of photosensitive layers and the satisfactory two-dimensional coordinate localization of multiwire proportional chambers.
Abstract:
An ultraviolet ray sensor for operating at high temperature includes a gas-filled sealed unit which encloses a photocathode having a spherically-shaped metal crystalline end and a ray collecting means for gathering and focussing incident rays on the photocathode. The sealed unit is made of a ceramic body with one end open to admit ultraviolet rays, that end being sealed by an ultraviolet ray transmissive window, the envelope of this sensor being capable of operating in air without oxidation or release of gas from the inner walls up to temperatures in excess of 600* C.
Abstract:
The invention provides metal oxide film structures for use as radioactive radiation windows, membranes of electrolytic cells and other purposes. The structures consist of an annular, or other closed frame of tantalum, niobium, tungsten or zirconium integral with a thin film of an oxide of the same metal, which spans the area enclosed by the frame. The structure is manufactured by subjecting a blank of the metal concerned, centrally masked on the larger part of the surface, to an anodizing treatment producing the oxide on all not-masked parts, removing the mask and subjecting the oxide-covered blank, as anode, to an electrolytic process by which the not-oxidized metal except the marginal portion, which constitutes the frame, is dissolved.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to compositions, methods, and uses for isolated biomolecule-containing fibers. The invention also relates to isolated, elongated biopolymers such as nucleic acids, polypeptides, lipids, and carbohydrates within fibers. The invention relates to methods of detecting and analyzing biomolecules in fibers using light, electrons, and neutrons. The invention further relates to methods of determining the sequence, structure, and properties of isolated, elongated biopolymers fixed within fibers.
Abstract:
A novel form of ionization detector, particularly one operating in the electron capture mode, is described. The detector includes iron-55 as a source of electrons to cause ionization. The detector may be operated in direct current, pulse or frequency modulated modes.
