Abstract:
A polyacrylate ester, and more particularly a polymethacrylate ester based dispersant-viscosity improver for lubricating oil compositions. Specifically, the dispersant viscosity improvers of this invention are nitrogen-containing copolymers comprising units derived from (A) from about 5% to about 75% by weight of alkyl acrylate ester monomers containing from 2 to 11 carbon atoms in the alkyl group; (B) from about 25% to about 95% by weight of alkyl acrylate ester monomers containing from 12 to about 24 carbon atoms in the alkyl group; and (C) From about 0.1% to about 20% by weight of at least one nitrogen containing monomer selected from the group consisting of vinyl substituted nitrogen heterocyclic monomers, N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate monomers, N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl acrylamide monomers and tertiary-alkyl acrylamides, provided that the total equals 100%. Processes for preparing the compositions, additive concentrates and lubricating oil compositions are described.

Abstract:
A multifunctional viscosity index improver for lubricating oils comprising reaction product of:(i) (a) degraded ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer obtained by degrading undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said undegraded copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chain containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than 2 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than 1.8 and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comprising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition from one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene; said degraded copolymer grafted with (b) ethylenically monounsaturated carboxylic acid material having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or anhydride group to form grafted degraded ethylene copolymer; and(ii) at least one polyamine containing one primary amino group and at least one tertiary amino group.
Abstract:
Improved additives for motor fuels and lubricants are provided comprising low molecular weight hydrogenated liquid polymers containing low levels of combined nitrogen. More specifically, hydrogenated adducts formed from normally liquid low molecular weight polydiolefins and acrylonitrile are excellent additives for motor fuels and lubricants. Motor fuels and lubricating oil compositions containing said additives are also provided.
Abstract:
An engine lubricating system for an internal combustion engine. The system comprises a vehicle engine; a circulation system for providing a continuing flow of lubricant to the vehicle engine and engine components; and a lubricant disposed within the circulation system. The lubricant comprises a base oil and at least one microencapsulated oil additive. The microencapsulated oil additive is selectively released into the lubricant based one or more localized event. The localized event may include a predetermined temperature change, a predetermined pH change, a localized high friction contact, and combinations thereof.

Abstract:
Compositions useful as oil additives are prepared in a solvent or a solvent free system by reacting (B) an unsaturated carboxylic acid reagent with (A) a hydrogenated block copolymer in the presence of (C) free radical initiators. The formed reaction product (D) can be further reacted with a (E) primary amine-containing compound in a solvent or a solvent free system.
