Abstract: Bipolar electrodes having two chambers for inflow and outflow of the reaction mixture to be electrolyzed. The chambers are separated from each other by a distance which is considerably larger than their width and the inlets and outlets are on the same side of the electrode. Electrodes of this kind are suitable, for example, for the Kolbe synthesis of dicarboxylic esters from dicarboxylic half-esters. Such esters are useful as plasticizers.

Abstract: Pinacol is prepd. by the electrolhydro-dimerisation of acetone in partitioned cell using as electrolyte a catholyte contg. 10-90 wt % acetone, 1-60 wt % water and 1-50 wt % to a quat. ammonium salt. The pref. amts. are 40-80 wt %, 5-30 wt % and 5-20 wt % respectively. The cell is pref. divided by porous membranes of cation exchangers e.g. sulphonated reticulated polystyrene. The anode may be Pb coated with PbO2, graphite or Ti esp. in combination with 1-10 wt % H2SO4 as anolyte. The cathode may be Cu, Ag, Cd, Zn, Sn, Pb, Tl or Hg but is pref. graphite or a plastic matl. filled with graphite. The quat. cpd. is e.g. of formula (I): (where R1-4 are each 1-6C alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and X- is an anion such as sulphate, alkylsulphate, phosphate, carbonate, tosylate, BF4-, SiF6- halide or perchlorate). Process may be continuous or discontinuous, give improved yields per unit of current over known methods and avoids the necessity of neutralising acids in soln.

Abstract: 1319151 Glyoxylic acid BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 5 Oct 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 47199/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Glyoxylic acid is prepared by the electrochemical reduction of an aqueous oxalic acid using a mercury cathode, the cathode chamber being separated from the anode chamber by an ion-exchanger membrane as diaphragm, and in which the oxalic acid flows in a thin layer between the mercury electrode and diaphragm. The membrane may be in the form of a hollow cylinder which encloses the anode chamber and dips into the mercury cathode. The anode chamber contains 1-50% sulphuric acid in which a platinized titanium electrode is immersed and the diaphragm may be sulphonated polystyrene.

Abstract: 1393147 Lead cells BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 1 Sept 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 46634/72 Heading H1B A lead cell has a lead salt solution and/or the corresponding acid as electrolyte and comprises a positive plate of titanium and a negative plate of graphite or graphite powder in a binder. In an embodiment a battery has bipolar electrodes having a titanium plate 18 with a layer 21 of lead and a graphite layer 20 with a layer 19 of lead dioxide. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the bipolar electrodes are stacked one above the other and separated by cruciform members. A plurality of monopolar electrodes may be used in parallel (Fig. 1, not shown). The surface of the titanium and the graphite plate may be roughened or seeded with magnetite or graphite or the titanium plate oxidized in the presence of compounds of A1 V or Bi or certain other metals. The graphite plate may be formed from graphite-filled plastics based on polyolefins which may be fluorinated or chlorinated, polyamides, polystyrene or polyesters. Such a plastics plate may be adhered to the titanium plate by an epoxy resin. Alternatively an acrylic or epoxy resin is used as the binder for graphite powder. The backing for the graphite plate may be Ni, Cu or chromium-nickel steel. The electrolyte may be perchloric, tetrafluoboric, fluosilicic or sulphamic acid. The cells are operative between 70‹ and - 50‹ C.
