Abstract: 1444388 Preparation of phenylhydroxylamines BASF AG 17 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 58363/73 Heading C2C Phenylhydroxylamines which may be substituted in the phenyl ring are obtained by electrochemical reduction of a nitrobenzene in an acid medium, using a diaphragm, the reduction being carried out using a mercury cathode or an amalgum cathode at a pH from 3À5 to 6À5, the distance from the cathode to the diaphragm being at most 5 millimetres. Examples 1-6 describe the preparation of the following derivatives of phenylhydroxylamines: 2 - (m - hydroxyphenyl) - 4 - methyl - 1,2,4- oxadiazolidine - dione - (3,5); 2 - (3 - chlorophenyl) - 4 - methyl - 1,2,4 - oxadiazolidinedione - (3,5); 2 - (3 - chloro - 4 - methylphenyl)- 4 - methyl - 1,2,4 - oxadiazolidinedione - (3,5) and 2 - (3,4 - dichlorophenyl) - 4 - methyl- 1,2,4 - oxadiazolidinedione - (3,5). These derivatives are prepared by treating the hydroxylamines prepared according to the invention with N-methyl-N-carbomethoxy carbamyl chloride in situ.

The membrane may be in the form of a hollow cylinder which encloses the anode chamber and dips into the mercury cathode. The anode chamber contains 1-50% sulphuric acid in which a platinized titanium electrode is immersed and the diaphragm may be sulphonated polystyrene.

Abstract: 4-hydroxymethyl-1,8-octane diols of formula (I) are new. The cpds. of formula (II) are hydrognated using heterogeneous, metal-contg. catalysts, pref. contg. 40 wt. % Co and 0.1-10 wt. % Mn, 0.1-20 wt. % phosphoric acid, and 0.01-1 wt. % Na, at 150-350 deg.C and pressure of 50-350 bar. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used to make polyurethane foams. It has improved material properties.
