    Abstract: Cured shaped articles may be produced by polymerizing (a) one or more resinous ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable polyesters containing radicals of one or more polybasic, particularly dibasic, carboxylic acids and of one or more polyhydric, particularly dihydric, alcohols, and if desired additionally radicals of one or more monobasic carboxylic acids and/or of one or more monohydric alcohols and/or of one or more hydroxycarboxylic acids, at least some of said radicals having ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable groups and (b) tertiary-butyl acrylate; if desired together with one or more other monomeric ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compounds. The weight ratio of polyesters (a) to the monomers (b) is from 1:0.2 to 1:1.5 and the monomers (b) contain 1 to 100% by weight of tertiary-butyl acrylate. Lists of suitable polyester components are given but the polyesters employed in the examples are derived from maleic and phthalic anhydrides and propanediol-(1, 2). The polyester is mixed with hydroquine and tertiary butyl acrylate and then polymerized with cyclohexanone peroxide in dibutyl phthalate in the presence of cobalt naphthenate in styrene. Glass fibres, yarns, fabrics and powders may be used to reinforce the polyesters.

    Abstract: A slow-release PKN fertilizer is produced by coating the PKN granules with an aqueous solution of a mixture of 20-80% of an aminoplast precondensate and 80-20% of a polyester of a polyhydric carboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, and curing the resin coating. The aminoplast precondensate may be partly or wholly etherified with methanol. The polyester may be partly precondensed with the aminoplast precondensate. The polyester may be modified by the presence of a C8-22 fatty acid or a C1-18 monohydric alcohol. 5-50% of the polyhydric carboxylic acid of the polyester may be replaced by the C8-22 fatty acid. The solution may also contain a water-miscible organic solvent, a substance to improve the flow and film formation, a corrosion inhibitor, and an aminoplast hardening agent. The solution may contain 30-80% of coating agent. The granules may have a particle size of 4-7 mm. Curing may be effected at 60-150 DEG C. for 2-20 minutes. One or more coatings may be applied. Examples of aminoplast precondensate and polyester constituents are given. Specifications 750,809, 785,645, 815,829, 908,493 and 954,555 are referred to.

    Abstract: Polymers and copolymers of trioxane are produced in substance by means of cationic catalysts at 60 DEG to 120 DEG C. by introducing the reaction components on to a flat chamber mould, having a small open surface, capable of being cooled externally and provided with a lining of an apolar plastics within a period which is shorter than the induction time of the polymerization, cooling the mould during the polymerization, and keeping the temperature of the mould above the melting point of the reaction components while the mould is being emptied. Cyclic ethers, cyclic acetals, cyclic ketals, cyclic esters, and polyacetals are specified comonomers, boron triflouride and its co-ordination complexes being preferred catalysts. Polyethylene, polypropylene and polytetrafluoroethylene are specified apolar plastics. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.

    Abstract: A moulding material which is capable of being shaped and cured by press moulding in the temperature range 70 DEG to 250 DEG C. contains (1) at least one filler and/or reinforcing material (I); (2) at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated polyester having a molecular weight of from 750 to 3000 and a softening point within the range 35 DEG to 250 DEG C. (II); (3) at least one organic peroxide having a decomposition point with the range 50 DEG to 250 DEG C. (III); (4) di - methallyl - terephthalate (IV); and optionally (5) one or more polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomeric compounds (V) other than di-methallyl-terephthalate; in the weight ratios of (I): (II + III + IV + V) of from 0.1 to 4, (II): (IV + V) of from 0.2 to 9, (III): (II + IV + V) of from 0.005 to 0.09, and (V): (IV) of less than 1. Lists of components I, II, III, and V are given and conventional additives may also be added to the moulding material. In the examples: (1) A polyester formed from maleic acid and propane-diol-1,2 is copolymerized with di - methallyl - terephthalate using dibenzoyl peroxide in dibutyl phthalate, there being present asbestos powder and optionally glass fibre cuttings having a length of 13 mm.; (2) a polyester formed from isophthalic and maleic acids and propane-diol-1,2 is copolymerized with dimethallyl-terephthalate and diallyl phthalate in the presence of chalk; (3) the polyester of Example (2) is copolymerized with di-methallyl-terephthalate using tertiary-butyl perbenzoate and the mixture is used to impregnate glass fibre fabric.

    Abstract: Polyester resins containing one or more ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable polyesters, one or more monomeric ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compounds, and one or more amines as polymerization accelerators contain one or more derivatives of hydroquinone as polymerization inhibitors, at least one of the hydroquinone derivatives having the formula where R1 is a hydrocarbon radical having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, R1 and R2 each denote hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Hydroquinone derivatives of the above formula mentioned are (a) compounds containing the skeleton of a 1,4-dihydroxy-5,8-dihydronaphthalene, which may be obtained by the intramolecular re-arrangement in acid medium from Diels-Alder adducts of 1 mol. of r -benzoquinone or (C1 to C4 alkyl)-r -benzoquinone and 1 mol. of a diene having a conjugated double bond, e.g. 1,4-dihydroxy-5,8-dihydronaphthalene; 1,4 - dihydroxy - 5,8-endomethylene - 5,8 - dihydronaphthalene; 1,4 - dihydroxy - 5 - methyl - 5,8 - endomethylene -5,8 - dihydronaphthalene and 1,4 - dihydroxy - 5,8 - endoethylene - 5,8 - dihydronaphthalene; (b) compounds which contain the skeleton of a 1,4-dihydroxy-9,10 dihydrophenanthrene, which may be obtained by intramolecular re-arrangement in acid medium from Diels-Alder adducts of 1 mol. of r -benzoquinone or (C1 to C4 alkyl)-r -benzoquinone and 1 mol. of styrene, e.g. 1,4-dihydroxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene; 2 - methyl - 1,4 - dihydroxy - 9,10 - dihydrophenanthrene and and 3-methyl - 1,4 - dihydroxy - 9,10 - dihydrophenanthrene; (c) compounds which contain the skeleton of a 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene, e.g. 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene itself and 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalenes in which one or two hydrogen atoms not belong to the hydroxyl groups are replaced by C1 to C4 alkyl groups.
