PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an alkyne compound through an improved generally applicable process by reacting a carbonyl-containing compound with an acetylenic group-containing compound in the presence of a specific basic catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) A compound of the formula: R1C(=O)R2 [R1 and R2 are each H or a (substituted or interrupted with non-adjacent hetero atom, or containing a C=C bond) 1-20C hydrocarbon; at least one of R1 and R2 is not H] is made to react with (B) a compound of the formula HC≡CR3 [R3 is H or a (substituted or interrupted with non-adjacent hetero atom, or containing a C=C bond) 1-20C hydrocarbon] in the presence of (C) a basic catalyst consisting of CsOH.H2O optionally in (D) an N-methylpyrrolidone-based solvent to obtain the objective compound of the formula R1R2C(OH)C≡CR3.

The invention also relates to a method for combating insects, nematodes and arachnids.
